Edmonton - My Favorite Canadian City So Far
I've traveled extensively throughout Canada - visiting multiple provinces as the mood struck. For many years, I had family living in Alberta and Newfoundland so it provided great opportunities to see what lay between these two parts of the country.
Not one to be traveling extensively by plane - preferring to see the beauty of God's creation - driving was my mode of transportation. As I crossed with my family from one provincial border into another, I felt I had added another notch to my proverbial traveling belt - and it felt great!
Needless to say, I had to venture into B.C., after being so close to the Alberta - B.C. border when visiting Banff National Park. I was pleasantly surprised when visiting Penticton - a family paradise which I would highly recommend to families everywhere.
Throughout these road trips, I had the opportunity to visit lots of places and enjoy numerous attractions. I've driven in numerous cities - from west to east - such as:
~ Chilliwack, Penticton and Kelowna in B.C. ~
~ Edmonton and Calgary in Alberta ~
~ Saskatoon, Yorkton and Regina in Saskatchewan~
~ Winnipeg and Brandon in Manitoba ~
~ Thunder Bay, Sault Ste. Marie, North Bay, Niagara Falls and Ottawa in Ontario ~
~ Montreal, Quebec City and Riviere-du-Loup in Quebec ~
~ Frederickton and Moncton in New Brunswick ~
~ Summerland and Charlottetown in Prince Edward Island ~
~ Halifax - Dartmouth and Sydney in Nova Scotia ~
~ Corner Brook and St. Johns in Newfoundland ~
Of course, I've visited other cities but these are the most prominent cities whose names most people would recognize. Despite it all, however, Edmonton rises to the top; it surely is one of my favorite Canadian cities to visit.
Would you care to follow along and learn what it is I enjoy so much about the city of Edmonton?

Edmonton Travels
You must spend at least a week in this beautiful city...
Beginnings

Though my partner and I did not meet in Edmonton, he spent many years of his adult life living there. In fact, he is the one who taught me to appreciate Edmonton as I do today.
I used to go to Edmonton to visit West Edmonton Mall. Though I still make at least one trip to the mall - and like to stay at the Fantasyland Hotel for one night - I've learned about other attractions the city had to offer, first hand. My partner and I took my girls to see Valley Zoo. He also introduced us to both the Rundle and Hermitage Park.
Furthermore, though he was unable to make it to the Muttart Conservatory with us, he highly recommended we visit the attraction, mentioning how he used to enjoy the wonderful displays of plant life.
During those trips when he was able to accompany us to Edmonton, he would drive us around the city - telling us about how much things had changed and developed from the time he had first moved there. He showed us some of the areas in which he used to go biking with one of his best friends. In fact, he shared so much with me that there was no way I could retain it all.
Furthermore, some of his closest friends live in Edmonton - and the kids and I had the opportunity to meet them. It was nice to put names to faces and see the homes in which these friends lived. It helps when trying to imagine scenarios my partner shares with me - stories from the past. With a face, voice and physical setting, I can more easily imagine what he is telling me.
Guaranteed, Edmonton will always be special to me because of the way it was introduced to me - by a man who was, and is, thoroughly in awe of the city. However, I've learned to appreciate it more each time I visit. There is always something new to discover and the picture it paints as parks wind themselves around the river valley is a breath-taking aspect, in and of itself.

Learn More About Edmonton Attractions
- Rundle Park :: City of Edmonton
- Rundle Park is a beautiful place to spend a day with your family. Whether you like to sit and enjoy a picnic, engage in recreational activities or take photos of nature as you enjoy the relaxing atmosphere - making you feel that you are nowhere near a city - Rundle Park is the place for you.
- Hermitage Park :: City of Edmonton
- Hermitage Park is a wonderful place to spend the day. If your family enjoys fishing, there is a pond from which you can fish. When my family and I visited, we sat for an hour or two and watched the geese interacting in the water -also enjoying a picnic, of course. There are hiking and biking trails as well - though we were too absorbed by the geese to check out those things.
- Muttart Conservatory :: City of Edmonton
- I only had the opportunity to visit the Muttart Conservatory once but what a memorable occasion it was. There are four pyramids designed to showcase floral/plant environments from various climates around the world. It's truly an oasis - a haven - where one can go to relax and find beauty and inspiration.
- Valley Zoo
- My family and I enjoyed our visit here and it is a place we will visit again. Valley Zoo is focused on conservation and boasts 350 animals. It's a beautiful place to relax without feeling the pressures associated with the city; in fact, you can forget you are even in a city until it's time to leave. Valley Zoo seems to be constantly changing; there always seems to be a plan in motion...
- Time to Visit - West Edmonton Mall!
- From the time you see the mall for the first time, something happens inside you. It may be the culmination of a dream coming true or perhaps the size itself will impress you. Regardless, West Edmonton Mall is more than a place to shop. It's a vacation destination for your family. You can even stay at the on-location hotel, Fantasyland; we enjoyed each of our stays there.

Accommodations
We enjoy our space when traveling - just as we enjoy our personal space at home. Though it feels wonderful to visit family and friends, it's nice to have our own place to go back to - to unwind and relax at the end of the day.
Though we enjoy staying at the Fantasyland Hotel, it's only reasonable to expect that most families would not stay there for a week - especially with so much to see and do outside of West Edmonton Mall.
That being said, we've stayed in a few hotels in Edmonton and they are, generally, in the Best Western family of hotels. One of my most recent stays was at the south end of the city - about 17 kilometers from the airport, heading towards Edmonton. This hotel is spacious, has laundry facilities and a pool with both a water slide and hot tub.
There are several restaurants which will deliver food to your hotel room. There is also a continental breakfast area for guests to enjoy before starting their day.
If you enjoy a fitness facility and high speed Internet privileges, you'll find that at Best Western South Edmonton Inn and Suites as well.
In relation to the major attractions we've enjoyed in Edmonton, Best Western South Edmonton Inn and Suites is:
~ 10 kilometers from the Valley Zoo ~
~ 14 kilometers from the Muttart Conservatory ~
~ 19 kilometers from West Edmonton Mall ~
~ approximately 15 - 20 kilometers from both Rundle and Hermitage Parks ~
The photo shown here is of a room located within this hotel. Our room was laid out differently with two queen beds and a sitting area; it was able to accommodate six people. Admittedly, my two younger children, my youngest niece, nephew and I enjoyed ourselves thoroughly. We swam, laughed, ate, laughed some more and, finally, had no choice but to collapse.
The next day we were off to West Edmonton Mall to meet up with the rest of the group. Where were they the night before? They were enjoying a Kid Rock and Bon Jovi concert. They had fun and so did we; in the end, that's all that matters.
Thoughts about Edmonton
I would love to hear your thoughts about Edmonton. Would you enjoy visiting this wonderful city sometime? Would the same things appeal to you or would you enjoy other attractions entirely?
Edmonton boasts so many attractions and opportunities for entertainment or, conversely, to provide relaxation. Visiting for a week really doesn't do it justice but, providing you did different things every day, you could see and experience a lot.
So, tell me. What do you think of Edmonton? Just remember to keep your response 500 characters of less.

When in Edmonton
Your favorite thing to do
I am really interested in hearing what people who have visited Edmonton have to say about this beautiful city. However, for the purpose of this debate, I would like to pose one simple question:
When in Edmonton, what would you rather do?

Shop and enjoy indoor attractions until you drop
Enjoy activities associated with nature
DentalTourism says:
Go to Jasper.
CanadaRed says:
Check out the Oilers.
Janiece says:
Like AJ, I vote for outdoor activities, unless the weather is bad!
ajgodinho says:
I've never been to Edmonton, but I would much prefer to enjoy the outdoor activities (of course depending on the weather).
