Experience Cultural Diversity at the Edmonton Heritage Days Festival

The Edmonton Heritage Days Festival is a great way to learn about various cultures!

The festival highlights and celebrates the heritage of the people of Edmonton, Alberta, and Canada, featuring over 80 different cultures from around the world!

It's a fabulous three-day festival held at Hawrelak Park in Edmonton that showcases food, entertainment, art, crafts, clothing and other cultural experiences from many heritages represented in Edmonton. Cultures are highlighted in pavilions that focus on each heritage as well as through other activities throughout the festival site. It's a fun, alcohol-free learning experience that's great for the whole family.

Why not consider coming to Edmonton to experience multiculturalism and great summer fun?

Officially, Heritage Days is called "The Edmonton Heritage Festival."

Edmonton Heritage Days: The Israeli Tent

This is me inside the Israeli tent, or pavilion, at Heritage Days. I really enjoyed this tent because I recently discovered through some family history research that some of my relatives on my dad's side were Jewish. Also, I've studied religions and spirituality most of my life and I love this stuff!

This year (2010), Edmonton will host the 35th annual Heritage Days Festival on July 31 & August 1 & 2 with 85 cultures represented!

Edmonton Heritage Days: Eating My Sri Lankan Dinner

Here I am taking a break from visiting the displays, but still experiencing the cultural diversity in Edmonton through my Sri Lankan lunch. One of the ways that the various heritages are highlighted and celebrated is through learning about and sampling the food. It was so yummy!

Edmonton Heritage Days: The Ugandan Tent

This is me in the Ugandan tent (boy, oh boy, the lighting really is not flattering!). It felt like home to me. I love elephants, giraffes and African heritage items like masks and various arts & crafts. I just melted into the atmosphere of the place and was almost transported to another place where time stood still. If I could have, I would have stayed here all day.

Edmonton Heritage Days is the largest food drive in the city, with approximately 50,000 kg of food collected for the Edmonton Food Bank every year!

Edmonton strives to be "green" at the festival, and at other times. Biodegradable plates, containers and utensils are used at many pavilions. Additionally, wind power is used, recycling bins are placed on the grounds, and public transportation is highly encouraged for access to the festival!
