Edmund Blair Leighton Biography

Edmund Blair Leighton was born on the 21st September 1853, the son of the artist Charles Blair Leighton. He was educated at University College School, before becoming a student at the British Royal Academy Schools. Leighton married Katherine Nash in 1885 and the couple had both a son and daughter. The son would, as his father before him, follow in his fathers footsteps and take up a career as an artist.

Blair Leighton exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy between the yeas 1878 to 1920. Leighton was, as could be foreseen from his historicaly themed paintings, a accumulator of aged musical instruments, art, and furniture. Leighton started exhibiting in 1874, and followed, four years later, in assuring the verdict of the Hanging Committee of the Royal Academy as a result of two paintings, titled respectively 'Witness My Act and Seal,' and "A Flaw in the Title." Since then his extremely formed style was on a regular basis represented at Burlington House until two years preceding to his death. lived at 14 Priory Road, Bedford Park, London, and died on the 1st September 1922.
