My Favorite Movies

Left on a desert island I could watch these over and over

  • Festen (or Celebration)- a 1998 Dogme film by Thomas Vinterburg. A suspense filled family drama from Denmark made in the Dogme tradition (no artificial light, special effects, all hand held camera, limited post production)
An excellent story and top notch acting ensemble
  • Lackawanna Blues - from Reuben Santiago Hudson's brilliant solo stage play, this is a wonderfully shot and acted film with a brilliant ensemble led by S. Epath Merkson and Terrance Howard with Carmen Ejogo, Delroy Lindo and Macy Gray
  • Fear of A Black Hat - from one of my favorite filmmakers Rusty Cundjieff. An hilarious black satire on the rap industry.
  • Tales From the Hood - Another great movie from Rusty Cundjieff. A take off on Tales from the Crypt, blastyle.
  • Book of Life - a Hal Hartley film/video (shot in DV) about Jesus' return to initiate Armageddon. Very funny with the Devil, mad and drunk in a bar. with PJ Harvey as Mary Magdelene
  • Hyena - a film from Senegalese filmmaker Djibril Diop Mambety, this is a remake of Frederich Durenmatt's play, The Visit. Wonderful story of revenge and redemption with a woman at the center.
  • Sankofa - The best film made about the trans-atlantic slave trade. Heart and gut wrenching
  • Sometimes in April - I like this one better than Hotel Rwanda. A Raoul Peck (Lumumba) film.
  • Friday - Ice Cube's 420 homage is funny. I could watch it endlessly.
