The Institute of Culture Brazil Italy Europe

Serving the poor children of the slums of Salvador, the ICBIE is a non-profit organization offering courses in computer science, foreign languages, music, art, and theatre.  The Leonardo da Vinci Library contains 12,000 books, CDs and videos and is open to the general public.  The ICBIE also offers a rich series of concerts, lectures, poetry readings, film projections, and seminars.  We assist local orphanages and encourage socially responsible tourists to stay with us, so they can learn about the realities, both wonderful and shocking, of Bahian society.

Volunteer to Help US!

We Need Your Talents!

We need volunteers to offer courses in languages, music, art, cinema, photography, poetry, theater and computer science. We also seek people to offer seminars, lectures, concerts, art and photography exhibits, or people who could help in the library or the office. We are happy to meet people who are studying or assisting the social problems of Salvador.

Socially Responsible Tourism

Lodging at the ICBIE

Visitors who want to escape the usual tourist circuits and participate in the extraordinary vitality of Bahia are invited to stay in the ICBIE Art Hostel, located in the Institute's back courtyard. You will have the opportunity to participate in all ICBIE activities, and use our star students as your guides around the city.

Julio & Bigode

ICBIE students tour Italy

Our young artists Julio and Bigode have been students at the ICBIE from the very beginning. They learned to speak Italian and have studied with visiting artists for more than three years, as their careers as street artists consolidated. They have used the ICBIE as a base, creating a crew of young kids from the neighborhood, making a Bahian-style artists' guild. They now receive a stipend from the City of Salvador, to paint murals in city parks, hospitals, schools, etc.
They are currently making a tour of Italy, sponsored by the City of Salvador and the ICBIE, where they will be visiting a dozen cities and demonstrating their crafts in festivals, schools and social centers. To see some of their work, go to
