Valkyries Vigil - Edward Robert Hughes

Biography
Edward Robert Hughes (1851-1914) is a familiar English painter whose work style was shaped by Pre-Raphaelite and Aestheticism art techniques. Hughes started his career in art with a Pre-Raphaelite style. Similar to artist and designer Edward Burne Jones, whom Hughes had met, he leaned toward Symbolism in the subjects of his work. Even with the symbolist undertones the bulk of Hughes' work, which was done primarily in watercolor gouache, reveals the precise observation of nature and careful technique affiliated with the Pre-Raphaelite movement. A few of Hughes best known works are the magical paintings, "Midsummer Eve" with a girl surrounded by a circle of dancing fairies as well as "Night With Her Train of Stars". Hughes was the nephew of pre-Raphaelite painter Arthur Hughes. He was appointed ARWS with the Royal Academy in 1891. Hughes selected as his diploma work for election to the Royal Academy's full membership a mystical piece inspired by a verse of poet Christina Rossetti, sister to Dante Gabriel Rossetti, "Amor Mundi". Hughes was known to try new, challenging methods with his work and had had a reputation as a perfectionist. He would execute multiple studies of a subject prior to painting it, and these studies on their own were fine enough to be displayed in exhibition. He was engaged to George Macdonald's daughter before she died. He was likewise an assistant of the William Holman Hunt's later years. The younger assistant Hughes aided the progressively frail Hunt with an edition of Hunt's renowned painting, The Light of the World, which now in St. Paul's Cathedral as well as assisted on painting titled The Lady of Shalott. Hughes died on April 23 1914 in St. Albans, Hertfordshire.
