Goal Setting... or old habits?

We've all heard of goal setting and how it can change our lives, but how many of us have taken any steps towards the goals that we want to achieve in our own lives?

It's common enough to get started on New Year's Eve. You know the kind of thing - you finally decide you're going to quit smoking, quit eating junk food, start that new business... and by January 4th you're back to your old habits again.

Why? Because it's not just about setting goals, it's about working your way towards them in the right way.

What is an effective goal?

One that makes you want to achieve it!

An effective goal is one that's achievable, detailed and makes you want to achieve it!

That last point might sound obvious but it's amazing the number of people set goals that they don't really feel too passionate about.

If your goal doesn't consume you; if it's not on your mind twenty four hours a day, then the chances of you reaching it are slim. Pick something you really want to achieve in your life.

Here's a point to remember - you shouldn't have to think too hard about the first goal you want to aim for. There is at least one thing in everyone's life that they'd like to do, and it's something that will have been on your mind on a regular basis for a long time. That's your goal.

Why is motivation so important?

The power of passion...!

Put simply, if you're not motivated to reach your goal, you won't reach it. But even when you do feel passionate about reaching your goal you'll still have times when you feel as though you'll never get there.

This doesn't mean you've chosen the wrong goal, or you should abandon it and try to achieve something else instead. Far from it.

There are plenty of reasons why you could be feeling like this - tiredness, too much else going on in your life, or the natural feeling that you aren't moving towards your goal quickly enough.

That's when you could use a helping hand, and there are a couple of ways of getting that extra push.

Subliminal video messages

Subliminal messages are hidden messages contained within a seemingly normal message, so that the subconscious picks up on them and puts them to good use during a subsequent event or situation.

Video messages work particularly well because you have a visual element to take in as well as an audio element. This strengthens the overall effect and helps you to attain the necessary skills and mental strength required to achieve your goal - not to mention every other goal you ever set for yourself.

The great thing about subliminal messages is that they affect different parts of your life. You can become more confident, find more energy, and become less anxious about what happens in your life.

While none of these seem to be related to goal setting, they will provide a firm foundation to push you more smoothly towards every dream you've ever had.

Self help guides

Self help guides helping you achieve your goals

There are plenty of these on the market, and they can help you to break down your goal into manageable steps to make it easier to reach.

Setting any kind of goal can seem like an insurmountable task to begin with.

But if you look at each step in turn you stop focusing on the end result and start achieving plenty of 'mini goals' along the way.

Finding your motivation

Motivating yourself to achieve your goals

Motivation is a key factor in whether or not you achieve your goals. What you need to do is find a number of ways that you can stay motivated for long enough to reach your dream.

Visual cues are powerful. This can be as simple as closing your eyes and imagining what it will be like when you've achieved your goal. Imagine yourself at the helm of your own successful business, complete with all the trappings that entails.

Verbal cues work just as well - even though you might feel silly at first. Reciting positive statements aloud helps to cement the goal firmly in your mind - but make sure you speak as if you've already achieved your dream. It will have amazing results.
