General Asthma Information

A short description of asthma and ways to minimise the effects of asthma on your health.

Background Information On Asthma

Asthma is one of the most common conditions affecting the respiratory system. World wide millions of people have some form of asthma. The condition is not limited to poor countries, it is quite prevalent in industrialised nations. Some link air pollution caused by industrial buildings to asthma, however, research results have been unclear on this. If you are affected by asthma then there are a lot of things you can do to minimise the effects. It will take time and dedication to train your body, and find ways around asthma symptoms.

If you encounter symptoms of asthma but you have not been diagnosed yet then it's time you see your doctor. After the doctor has concluded that you actually have asthma it's time to find what triggers the attacks that cause your airways to narrow. Finding the culprits won't be easy, unless you have monitored how you react to certain irritants already. Dust is one of the main irritants and it's hugely important to keep your house clean. Another major cause of asthma attacks is pet hair. Pet hair gets stuck on everything and is hard to remove. Make sure no pets enter your bedroom, you spend about a third of the day in your bedroom - it needs to be cleared of potential triggers.

Asthma does not only affect the elderly or those with weak health. It's a very common problem in young children. In the US alone there are more than 5 million children with asthma. Early detection prevents awful surprises at a later stage.

How does an asthma attack occur? It occurs when you breath and an irritant enters your lungs - the lungs will respond immediately, and get inflamed. The airways tighten and you will shortly feel out of breath. There are different levels of attack, some very mild - and some dangerous to your health.
