EGG-celent Math Lessons and Learning Activities

The birds are nesting so this is an EGG-celent time for egg math. We will be measuring eggs, adding eggs, counting eggs and doing all kinds of fun, unique activities with egg in this math unit study. How many eggs do various oviparous animals lay? How much do those eggs weigh? How many eggs could you fit in an Easter Basket? Finding the volume of a basket or nest is a great mathematical way of practicing estimation.

Are you looking for math lessons to accompany a unit study of eggs, birds, amphibians, reptiles or other egg layers? Here you will find dozens of fun math activities using eggs as math manipulatives. Sometimes we will use plastic eggs and sometimes we will use chicken eggs. How can we use eggs to teach math?

Scientists weigh the eggs of oviparous animals in the wild as a way to measure their health. What can scientists learn from studying the weight of eggs in the wild?

Set up an Egg Weighing Center.

1. Provide eggs. Usually we weigh chicken eggs but sometimes we weigh quail eggs, goose eggs.
2. Make sure that the children know how to clean up after a spill and wash their hands thoroughly.
3. Label each egg and provide paper for recording information.

Egg math can be lots of fun. We learn from a scientist how to weigh eggs using a hanging scale. We count eggs as we gather them or count them by the dozens. There are many fun ways to measure eggs. What is the circumference of an egg? What is the difference between the circumference of the egg if you measure around the narrow width compared to the long width?

How much does the yolk weigh compared to the white of the egg? What other ways could you measure an egg?

Eggs, Math and Oviparous Animals!

Counting Egg Laying Animals Reinforces Understanding of Place Value

When children are leaning place value, it is important to count and use counters to visually and tactilely understand what is meant by those numbers. As you name each animal, place a Unifix Cube on the table. When you reach ten, have one of the children push those ten together and place it in the tens column. Continue until you have named as many oviparous animals as possible.

Unifix Cubes - 1000 per Box; no. DD-2BKA

Amazon Price: $83.65 (as of 05/31/2012)Buy Now

Unifix Cubes fit together easily to form rods of ten blocks making it easier for children to understand such concepts as place value. You can buy Unifix Cubes in smaller quantities, I just liked the illustration here as it shows how to put the blocks together when we are counting egg laying animals.

100 Plastic Easter Eggs

Crack the eggs and discover the math...

Assorted Plastic Easter Eggs - 100 Cnt.

Place letter tiles in plastic Easter Eggs to spell out the names of oviparous animals. Children crack open an egg, rearrange the letters to spell the names of egg laying animals. If you use Scrabble letter tiles you can tally your score to see who scored the most points in 5 minutes.

For advanced learners, find out how many points per minute. Do you accumulate more points in the first minute, second minute, fifth minute?
