This is so creative! I bet you could also melt crayons and pour them inside to make bigger crayons. This is an idea I saw for muffin tins but it ruins the muffin tin.

I've always found ways to reuse my egg cartons. One is by donating them to a local farmer who provides farm fresh eggs in exchange for the cartons. (I've also used them to start seedlings, too.) Great ideas here for additional uses that I never thought of.

Lots of excellent ideas. It's not creative, but we reuse the egg cartons that we used to buy from the grocery.... to store our hens eggs in. I'm going to have to get my friends to save some more for us because these are wearing out.
  • a_willow Sep 17, 2010 @ 1:42 am | delete
Yes, we do that too. :) We don't raise our own chicks but I'm sending empty cartons to one farmer near by.

Fabulous and eggs-citing ideas here! Now... can we have one that deals with all the Easter egg boxes and plastic inserts?
  • fotolady49 Mar 11, 2010 @ 1:13 pm | delete
    Hi Michelle,
I wish I would known about this lens last year. I had a stack of cardboard egg cartons in my basement to reuse/recycle and all they did was collect dust and cobwebs and my daughter 'made' me through them away. I'm trying to quit being a packrat ...lol...[losing battle] and I knew deep down inside there was many uses for them, like to start seedlings and to give to people who raised chickens...there are still a few of them around...anyway you have so many good ideas....I'm definitely going to bookmark and favorite this lens....5*****

That was so Funny - egg carton and baby chicks!

    Thanks for the great ideas!
I rescue about 12 cartons of cold, fresh eggs a week (usually one egg is broken so stores throw out the whole carton). They also throw out empty cartons which I keep and use to put the eggs in that are in messy cartons. I then donate the eggs along with $1,000 more worth of fresh, good food every week to a homeless shelter.
    Keep spreading the green ideas!

Another great lens - my niece has Aspergers and we used to put little bits of paper with numbers on them in the different 'holes' of an empty egg carton and then she had to put numbered ping pong balls into the right 'hole.' It was an activity promoted by the Aspergers Society, but I also used it with my toddler for recognition skills.

The seedlings is another thing I use the egg cartons for, otherwise they go to school :)

I remember using an egg cartoons to make a soundproof room for one of my audio hobbies. 5*
  • Jimmie Oct 15, 2008 @ 2:19 am | delete
I think that spraying the carton with a bleach and water solution (or Lysol or other disinfecting spray) would kill any possibility of Salmonella. No need to throw them out for that reason.

Egg cartons can be used for preschoolers to do simple sorting activities -- buttons, beads, beans, coins, etc. These are early math experiences.

I think it's fun to turn cardboard egg cartons into alligators. Just cut them in half, paint them green, add googly eyes and tie one end together with yarn. Their mouths open wide to see their teeth.
