What is egg tempera?
Tempera is the word used to describe a medium which is dry pigment which is tempered with an emulsion and thinned with water. What makes tempera painting different from fresco painting is that a binder is added to the tempera which enables the paint to bind and adhere to a surface.
The word is derived from the verb "to temper" which means both to bring to a proper even consistency and to toughen.
Tempera is an ancient painting medium and has been used by many cultures in particular those relating to ancient Egypt, Babylonia, Mycenean Greece, and China. The choice of support varied from place to place - it has been used on wood panels but also on stone and papyrus. In Europe, artists gradually switched to oil paint as this became more readily available.
Egg tempera is the most durable type of tempera. Use of the egg yolk as the binding agent which creates the emulsion means it dries quickly to create a robust film of paint which is generally not affected by ether temperature or humidity. This means it remains in good condition over time.
The quick drying time of egg tempera means that a different coloured paint can be applied on top of existing paint without creating any mixing or disturbance to the layer underneath. Very many egg tempera painters apply paint in small strokes and colours often mix and blend optically in the eyes of the viewer.
Those painting with tempera generally used a rigid panel. Panels are often prepared for painting with several thin layers of gesso which are sanded down between each player. The resulting support is both smooth and absorbent.
Paintings can either be left unglazed - in which case the paintings often seem very light - or oil glazes can be used to develop a depth of tone

No one knows when someone first used egg as a paint binder. It is easy
to imagine the accidental spilling of egg into an early paint mix, or
for someone to notice that spilled egg could harden into a strong film. - The most efficient way to start using egg tempera?
- What kind of wood shall I use as a support? I have tried MDF but I heard that its longevity isn't very good because of all the glues inside and their acidity. Ply wood, on the other hand, is very sensitive to moisture when I apply some rabbit skin glue over it. Its fibres get thicker and the surface isn't smooth anymore.

- Sennelier - Tempera
- Sennelier Egg Tempera is an authentic formulation of classic egg tempera as used by artists since the Renaissance. In fact, before the rise of oil painting, egg tempera was the predominant painting medium in the 16th century. Much of the religious panel painting done between the 12th and the 15th century was done in this delicate and subtle medium, which is capable of detailed and complex effects. The Sennelier egg tempera is famous as the medium used by Marc Chagall in many of his most spectacular works.
