Elegant Gothic Lolita is a mode of dress that was birthed from Japanese pop/Harajuku culture and is now being taken up by fans in Europe and America. The use of "gothic" in this context is not the same meaning as found in the European "goth" fashion and music scenes.

Elegant Gothic Lolita is a fusion of Victorian styles and babydoll elements. Or you might think of it as a French maid accented with clubwear. The look is primarily black, but there are also variations in a few pastels (pink, blue) or white. Bows, aprons, lace, ruffles and petticoats all give the look it's layered and soft edge.

It's not "gothic" like the variations found in the US and Europe when you usually think of goths in those areas. This overlaps with cosplay and anime, with a Japanese speed metal soundtrack.
