A Unit Study for Homeschool
Ancient Egypt is one of the most fascinating of world cultures! What child isn't intrigued with mummies, pyramids, and the complicated religion of this ancient civilization?
Create an interdisciplinary study by including subjects besides just history. For example, you can study the plethora of gods and goddesses through their portrayal in Egyptian art. The Egyptians also had advanced mathematical understanding.
Float down the Nile with the Pharaohs and study Ancient Egypt today. Record your learning in a lapbook or notebook! Here are some of the best free, online resources available.
Ancient Egypt Lapbook Photos
These photos are from my daughter's Ancient Egypt lapbook created in the first grade. We were using Sonlight curriculum (Core 1) at the time.

- Two nice printables are offered free here!
- British Museum
- These are actually teacher's guides to help with a museum tour. But even it you can't tour this exhibit, there are some nice pages in these PDFs.
Life in Ancient Egypt-- pages 14 & 15 are especially adaptable to minibooks. One has a piece of Egyptian art and various gods and goddesses to label in the image. Another is a list of Egyptian good luck symbols with space to draw your own.
Also the Symbols of the Pharaoh PDF has some nice charts and worksheets that would make great minibooks or notebooking pages.
Browse around their PDF offerings and see what suits your particular unit study. - Paper Dali
- These adorable paper dolls were made by a mom who uses them to teach and play with her children! You'll find Egyptian men, women, Pharoah, and some gods.
- Learning Connections Ancient Egypt Resources
- Especially nice here are the map of ancient Egypt and the hieroglyphics chart. But there are other options that you may find useful as well.
- Pyramid Shape Template
- This 2D drawing of a pyramid shows its 3D quality with dotted lines. Use this template to make a shape book or even a trifold or accordion book.
- Highland Heritage Forms
- Scroll down to the Ancient Egypt section for several choices including a pyramid shapebook, an Egyptian princess shape book, a cartouche pattern and a falcon necklace pattern.
- Carnegie Science Center
- Scroll down to Mummies: Secret of the Pharaohs, a full color PDF jam packed with facts and beautiful photographs. Although this is a resource guide to accompany an Omnimax movie, this resource can stand alone as a great reference about mummies. This even goes into forensic science and would be of great interest to older children.

My daughter loves this series (other titles include Ancient China, Vikings, and Ancient Greece). The Binkerton twins and their little sister Libby travel back in time and get involved in ridiculous adventures as they learn about ancient civilizations.
These books are done in comic book style with facts added at the bottom of each page. Some of the books include cleverly disguised nudity (a topless dancer behind a column for example) or bare bottoms of children, so be aware if that is an issue with you. I find them culturally appropriate and humorous, not lewd at all.
Free Clip Art for Ancient Egypt
- Karen's Whimsy Ancient Egypt Public Domain Clip Art
- A wonderful collection of black and white images. Be sure to look at all of them. From the menu on the left, choose Ancient Past and then Egyptians. There are many pages available!

- A really attractive site with nice clipart of gods and goddesses, hieroglyphs, and more.
- King Tut One Ancient Egypt Clip Art
- Six pages of images including these topics: pyramids and the sphinx, the vulture and the scarab, the Gods of Egypt, People of Ancient Egypt, decorative banners, pharaohs and queens.
- Webweaver's Free Clip Art
- A few quality selections including King Tut, scarab, and an animated eye of Horus.
Be sure to look at the bottom of the pages for additional links to Ankhs, Egyptian Gods & Godesses, and Egyptian Webpage Dividers. - Classroom Clipart
- This site has some great images, but they are not organized correctly all of the time. So don't let the images of Greek warriors and Greek columns stop you when you land on the Ancient Egypt page. Click on some of the subcategories within Ancient Egypt or browse through the entire category. There are some good images here. And since they are specifically for educational uses, they are all kid friendly.
- EduPics Coloring Pages
- Among the coloring pages are many full color JPG clip art images.

What fun these would add to a study of Ancient Egypt! Little ones can play with toys that reinforce your unit study as they listen in to the older children's lessons. The toys could be used to narrate back what was studied. Or use them to create 3D dioramas!
