What is Egyptian Papyrus
It is a material made from fibres of a plant called Cyperus Papyrus. Cyperus is a large-size variety of a sedge, a tall grass with strong stems.
The usability of this unique material was discovered by ancient Egyptians. They learned to produce a paper-like material from the soft core of Cyperus' stems. This techniques is more than 5,000 years old.
Egyptians themselves called the material wadj or tjufu. The current name is derived from Greek language and has nothing to do with Egypt.

How was Egyptian Papyrus made?
The inner core of the stems was freed of the shell and cut in long strips. The strips were then placed in water to induce fermentation. Then the first layer of wet strips was placed on a hard surface and a next layer in a certain angle on top of it. Then both layers were rolled and pressed together.
When the layers stick together, the raw papyrus was dried in the sun applying pressure. The last stage of making Egyptian papyrus was to remove the odd solid bit or sliver with a special polishing tool.
