Nile Cruise: The Best Way to See Egypt.

The best way to see Ancient Egypt is to cruise along the Nile, although there is a lot to see in Cairo or the Valley of the Kings, for a few days, without traveling the length of the Nile. Many tourists also go to Egypt for the beaches, diving and snorkeling opportunities.

The Nile cruises mostly go from Luxor, near the Valley of the Kings and Valley of the Queens to Aswan, stopping at various temples and ancient sites along the way: El Minya; Beni Hasan; Tell El Amarna; Asyut; Abydos; Dandara; Luxor Temple; Karnak Temple; Necropolis of Thebes (including the tombs of Rameses VI, tomb 9, Seti I, tomb 17, Tutankhamun, Tomb 62 and the Colossi of Memnon, Deir El Bahri and Medinet Habu); Isna; Idfu; Kom Ombo; The Botanic Island, Granite Quarries, High Dam and Philae Temples in Aswan. Abu Simbel is another sight that can be access in a separate cruise from Aswan or by plane. The Temple of Rameses II is another important sight.

This article features photographs from Cairo, Gisa, along the Nile to Luxor and Aswan and travel tips, advice and recommendations of the best places to stay and best archeological sites in Egypt.

The Nile Cruise

Many cruises have a fancy dress party one evening to allow you to meet the other guests and make a fool of yourself, but where do you get fancy dress from? While waiting to go through a lock, queued up with many other cruise ships, suddenly you will find your ship surrounded by many small boats and you can haggle from the top deck for clothes. They throw them up for you to look at, and try on, then if you like them throw money down money to them.

Egypt Excursions

The Nile has so many wonderful sights to see and the cruise ships stop at each of the major ones for small groups to disembark and be escorted by horse-drawn carriage, coach or small boat. Excursions include many archeological sites featuring ancient mummies and temples dedicated to many different gods. This really is a relaxing way to see the sights.

Aswan, Egypt

Aswan is the end of the cruise, because the enormous Aswan High Dam gets in the way, although you can take another cruise from here on to Abu Simbal. The best place to stay in Aswan is the Old Cateract Hotel, where Agatha Christie wrote The Death on The Nile. It retains the character of the era in which she wrote the novel and has wonderful views from the bar across the river to the botanical gardens.

I've never felt any urge to go on a conventional "cruise" - big ocean liner, too much food, shuffleboard, all that sort of thing - but you've certainly made me *crave* a cruise on the Nile!

It's funny, when I think of Egypt I don't think snorkeling. LOL. I think archeology and history.

Nice lens Andy, great photos 5***** Back in the early 90's I was on safari in Kenya with a load of backpackers, and became good friends with one, an East German guy who was working in Cairo. He said that one night he had climbed the Great Pyramid and sat on the top to watch the sun come up. Sounds so cool...
