I love layered salad, although ours is slightly different - no Miracle Whip (whatever that is) in the UK. We don't mix it before serving, just scoop it onto the plates so everybody can see the glorious layers. My daughter-in-law from Australia game me the recipe and said her mother had found it in Woman's Weekly in the 70s. Now I want to make one!
  • Millionairemomma May 22, 2012 @ 7:09 pm | delete
OMG, it looks so decadent and delish. Can I have another serving please? This is another delicious recipe I learned from squidoo.

I had an eight layer salad like this years and years ago, loved it and finally got the recipe from my sister in law's friend who made it.... then I lost it! I am so happy to see this lens because it looks exactly like the one I had and now I can't wait to make it, so thank you for sharing!
  • joyldev Mar 23, 2012 @ 4:59 pm | delete
Great lens. My three favorite parts of this lens: the vibrant images (very nice), the reveal of your secret ingredients in a black box module (genius and very kind of you since many chefs don't always reveal their secret ingredients), and sharing the information about the Arthur Courts design of bowls. God bless!
  • juliavm Mar 23, 2012 @ 2:21 pm | delete
Great recipe. Am feeling so hungry now.
  • desertdarlene Mar 23, 2012 @ 9:56 am | delete
I've only had 8 layer (and 7 layer) salad a few times, but I really liked it!
  • Jillynn Mar 23, 2012 @ 9:41 am | delete
My son in law will do anything to get me to make my layered salad. Inspired from the original, I add or subtract things to give variety but generally use a mix of spring greens and spinach for the "lettuce," colorful bell peppers, depending on the season (red, yellow or orange) and pomegranate seeds or cut up mango which introduces a delicious sweetness. Thanks for the great lens!
  • Jake_2525 Mar 22, 2012 @ 9:58 pm | delete
My grandma made something like this and it was good. But I'll have to try your recipe. Great lens.

Whoops - forgot to tell you: angel blessed for the high quality photos and instructions and just the general yumminess quotient of this lens.
  • bloomingrose Mar 22, 2012 @ 1:32 pm | delete
Your stuff is always so good - I will try this. I prefer mayonnaise over Miracle Whip though - do you think it makes a difference?
  • JaguarJulie Mar 22, 2012 @ 2:41 pm | delete
Well, I haven't tried mayonnaise but think it should work OK. I suggest that you taste test the topping mix before you add it to the salad. I think the Miracle Whip gives a lighter or sweeter zip.
  • teristazko Mar 22, 2012 @ 8:25 am | delete
Wow, your 8 layered salad looks delish!!! I can't wait to try it! Thanks for sharing.

    Hi,

I sure do wish I had your skill on cooking. This actually looks like something I can do :) Most of the time if I make something it burns. I don't need to heat this. Also a big fan of Cayenne Pepper and Horseradish that should give it the extra zip it needs. I saved this so could have future reference on a Eight Layer Salad.
  • louiswery Sep 30, 2010 @ 4:20 pm | delete

    Hi, Julie.

Love the look and sound of this! The concept rings a vague bell at the back of my mind regarding something my mother used to prepare when I was a child but I don't think she called it layered salad - I may be wrong, however, the memory is hazy. I'm definitely going to take it on board though and see what I can come up with. Hope you're doing great!!

Hey, there, Julie! You make the best food lenses. I am looking forward to the day when Microsoft comes up with an app that will allow users to reach into the screen with a fork. I name for it when they do: "Deli Windows." (Geez, I hope you are wrong about "humorous conservative Republican" being an oxymoron. I get more conservative by the hour...and I've been a gagwriter/cartoonist for eons.) :)

I'm not fan of cheddar but indeed, it looks like the best cheese to mix into a salad! I'm going to save the page on my computer so that I can copy one of those recipes in case the Sun would come here and that I can host a barbecue party - perfect for such a meal!
  • JaguarJulie Jun 14, 2010 @ 8:34 am | delete
Well, cheddar works good for us because it holds up well; it has integrity. And, I can opt to have mild, medium or SHARP! It is the prettiest salad that I make and always a hit no matter WHO is in the audience. Hugs!
  • Rob Sue Jun 6, 2010 @ 6:35 pm | delete

Shesh Julie, how many layers does it take to make a salad? You better watch over your should because I am going to come out with an 8 layer salad. It will be better because... well... it will be one more layer.

Jokes aside nice work and that salad might just fit into my new diet. ***** to ya!

The recipe sounds so good my tastebuds are budding. I've tried the 7 layer salad. This one of yours is different ... I've never seen one that says mix it all together before serving. As usual a great lens! 5*
  • Ener-G Oct 11, 2008 @ 3:31 pm | delete
OMG, I thought I could remember this without rereading the recipe! LOL...I think all I got right was the peas, bacon and cheddar cheese. Oh, and the horseradish sauce. So here's my question...how deep should the layer of mayonnaise/sourcream/horseradish be so that you get a good mix on all the vegies without overglopping it?
  • tojona Oct 11, 2008 @ 3:01 pm | delete

Interesting lens; I'm not much of a salad fan myself though. My 'salad' generally consists of lettuce, lots of mayonnaise, and not much else at all! Needless to say I'm not particularly adventurous when it comes to food.... As I say though; nice lens, and even to me the salad does look really rather tempting!

Julie, Julie, Julie, you've outdone yourself, once again...I LOVE 7-Layer Salad but have only had the traditional version. Can hardly wait to make it with your "secret" ingredients. Another brillian lens and I continue to learn from you. Thanks.

I love 7-layer salads, and your 8-layer sounds yummy. Great job with the directions and photos. Favorited, 5*, and already a fan! ;-)
