The Eisenhower Dollar -- Commemorating a Great General and President

Following the retirement of the Peace Dollar, the Eisenhower Dollar is a $1 coin that was produced by the United States Mint from 1971-1978. The Eisenhower Dollar featured a likeness of Dwight David Eisenhower, President of the United States from 1953-1961. The front (obverse) and back (reverse) of the coin were both designed by Frank Gasparro. The Eisenhower Dollar followed the Peace Dollar. Among the distinctive characeristics of the coin is the fact that it was the last of the "large" dollar coins. Those which followed the Eisenhower were considerably smaller in size and weight.

Where is the Mint Mark?

The Mint Mark on the Eisenhower Dollar is located on the coin's obverse at the base of President Eisenhower's neck.

A Pointed Question about the Eisenhower Dollar

There are currently four mint facilities operated by the United States government which produce coins. You can only form the name of the location of one of those mints using the letters on the Eisenhower Dollar coin. Can tell me what that facility is?
Rules: You can only use a letter the number of times that it actually appears on the coin.

Where are the Designer's Initials?

As is customary on United States Coinage, you can find the initials of the coin's designer on the coin itself. The Eisenhower Dollar was designed by Chief Engraver Frank Gasparro, and you can find his initials on the reverse of the coin below and to the right of the Eagle. The Bicentennial Dollar, however, was designed by Dennis R. Williams. His initials are on the reverse of the coin immediately below the Liberty Bell.

Can You Guess???

If you stacked up all of the Eisenhower Dollars struck in 1971 (the first year they were minted), how tall would that stack be?

The answer's a little further down the page!

So What's My Eisenhower Worth?

I Can't Say, But Here's Some Info to Point You Toward an Answer

Coin Reference BookThe value of a coin is based on two factors. The first is how rare the coin is. This is a combination of how many coins were originally minted, and what happened to them. Some are destroyed accidentally. Some have been recalled by the government. Collectors have taken some out of circulation. As a particular type of coin has fewer examples available, it becomes more valuable. The other factor is the physical condition of a coin. The closer a specimen is to perfect is, the more valuable it becomes. So a rare, perfect coin is much more valuable than a common, worn coin.
The American Numismatic has developed a grading system to describe the condition of a coin. What I will discuss here is coins that have been minted to go into general circulation, released. The conditions of the coins are represented by names, as well as a combination of letters and numbers. I have summarized some general conditions here as well as several comments specific to the Eisenhower Dollar.
Perfect Uncirculated (MS-70) This indicates a coin in perfect, new condition. It shows no trace of handling, wear, or contact with other coins.
Gem Uncirculated (MS-65) This is an above average uncirculated coin. It may be brilliant, or it may be lightly toned. There are very few contact marks either on either surface of the coin or on the rim.
Choice Uncirculated (MS-63) This coin has some distracting contact marks and/or blemishes in the prime focal areas of one or both surfaces. The luster of the coin may be impaired.
Uncirculated (MS-60) This coin has no trace of wear, but it may show several contact marks, and the surface of the coin may lack luster, or even be spotted.
Choice About Uncirculated (AU-55) There is evidence of friction on the high points of the coin's design, but most of the mint luster remains. The high points of Eisenhower's cheek and jawbone, the center of the neck and the high points of the Eagle's feathers show signs of wear.
About Uncirculated (AU-50) This coin shows traces of light wear on many of the high points of the coin. At least half of the original mint luster is still present.
Choice Extremely Fine (EF-45) The coin exhibits light overall wear on the highest points of the coin. Some of the original mint luster is still evident. All design details are still very clear and sharp. Look for wear on the Eagle's head, wear, and the ridges of the wings. Coin Reference Book
Extremely Fine (EF-40) There is light wear throughout the design, but all features of the design are still sharp and well-defined. Although not an essential element to the the definition of this grade, some traces of mint luster may still exist.
Choice Very Fine (VF-30) Light, even wear on the surface and highest parts throughout the design. All major features of the design, as well as al lettering remain sharp. Wear spots show on Eisenhower's hair, causing the lines to be weak but still fully visible. Feathers on the eagle's body are worn but still visible.
Very Fine (VF-20) While all major details of the design remain clear, there is moderate wear on high points of the coin's design.
Fine (F-12) There is moderate to considerable even wear. The design remains bold, and the overall appearance of the coin is still pleasing to the eye.
Very Good (VG-8) The coin is well worn with the main features of the design remaining clear and bold, although they have been worn somewhat flat.
Good (G-4) This coin is heavily worn. The design is still visible, but many of the details are flat, and the design is faint in some areas.
About Good (AG-3) This coin is very heavily worn with portions of the lettering, date, and legend have been worn smooth. In many instances, the date is barely readable. of possible values.

I'll Bet You Didn't Know This About Dollar Coins!

Traditionally dollar coins have contained an amount of metal proportionate to the amount of metal in the amounts in lower denominations. This means that a dollar coin contains twice the cupronickel that a half dollar has, four times that of a quarter, and ten times that of a dime. This caused the coin to be quite large. With the coins no longer containing silver, the public was unhappy with the large size. The Eisenhower Dollar was the last dollar coin to exhibit this proportionalism. After this, the Susan B Anthony Dollar and its successors were significantly down-sized.

The Answer to the Mint Puzzle Question...

The four mint facilities are Philadelphia, Denver, San Francisco and West Point. The only place whose name you can make from the letters on the Eisenhower Dollar is West Point. Interestingly, the Eisenhower Dollar was never produced at the mint at West Point.
