Museum Of American Indians And Western Art

An Indianapolis museum that my husband and I are proud to be members of is the Eitlejorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art. Located at 500 W. Washington St, Indianapolis, Indiana the museum is now a part of the White River State Park. Housed within its magnificent walls is the extensive collection of Native American Art and Western American art from the businessman and philanthropist Harrison Eitlejorg.

Follow along with me as I tell you more about one of my most favorite museums, The Eitlejorg.

George Gund Collection Of Western Art

A most magnificent display of original art can be found in the Gund Gallery of Western Art. Original art by famous artists of western life include Frederic Remington and Charles Russell.

Cleveland businessman George Gund loved horses and collected both paintings and sculptures with themes of horses in them.

Taos Society Of Artists

Collection shown in the Eitlejorg Museum

In the gallery of paintings done by the Taos Society of Artists, visitors will see exquisite work depicting Native Americans in a variety of scenes. Some of my favorite artists on display include: Ernest Blumenschein, Buck Dunton, Bert Geer Phillips, and Joseph Henry Sharp.

In 1915 a group of artists formed this society to promote their art of New Mexico and Southwestern paintings. At one time there were 19 members and the society stayed active until about 1927.

Learn About Native American Totems

Many times the art created by Native Americans or about Native Americans will be a result of tribal traditions and spirituality.

Dedicated Posts To The Old West

Many of the artists who have items on display at the Eitlejorg have or had the same fascination that I have with the Old West. The art may be of Native Americans, Cowboys, or just the western way of life. I write about my love of the topic on my blog.
