Adult Day Care Program Activities

If you are in search of elder care that provides structured activities and assistance, an Adult Day Care Program may suit your needs. Licensed by the California Department of Social Services, this non-medical, day-time senior care program provides various levels of supervision and assistance to seniors (and even younger adults) who are unable to care for themselves during the day.

Besides providing meals support with various daily living tasks, Senior Care Adult Day Programs also offer a number of activities that help keep seniors alert, improve physical strength and increase socialization skills. They range from simple arts and crafts to memory-enhancing games, puzzles and much more.

Purpose of Adult Day Elder Care

Elder Care San Diego

Just as the title implies, these centers offer various types of care and structure for elderly individuals during the day when their caretakers, typically family members, are unable to provide it. Senior day care centers allow caregivers to:

  • Maintain employment outside the home

  • Help with the physical aspects of home care

  • Receive respite since caregiving is a 24-hour-a-day job

  • Give their loved ones the proper medical attention without placing them in an outside elder care facility

Activities in an Adult Day Program

Those enrolled here typically are unable to be left alone for long periods of time during the day when their caregiver - usually a relative or in-home caretaker - is at work or unable to provide supervision. Activities offered in this type of environment typically include:
  • Group outings: Trips to the grocery store or park are common types of outings that are available in an Adult Day Program. For those who don't drive or don't have anyone to drive them, this is a good chance to get out and get some fresh air or pick up a few things from the store. It is good to note that not every individual who attends this type of center is physically or mentally capable of going on a group outing. This is typically assessed upon admission.

  • Physical exercise: Studies have shown that senior citizens at risk of losing independent functioning can benefit from a structured exercise program. It can also improve physical strength and may help in slowing or delaying osteoporosis or arthritis. Physical activities typically include walking, chair exercises and stretching. Some centers even have a variety of exercise equipment such as treadmills and exercise bikes for use.

  • Life skills:  Sometimes just baking a batch of cookies or brownies gives seniors a sense of accomplishment especially if cooking is not a practical activity at home. Other life skills practiced in an adult day care include training on computers, cell phones, DVD players and other electronics.

  • Cognitive fun: Variety is the key to success here. Using repetition and patterns helps strengthen cognitive ability and provide mental stimulation. Activities include everything from board games and art therapy to card games and even video games. Some common activities include puzzles, bingo, arts and crafts, Scrabble and coloring pages.

  • Relaxation: Sometimes, people just want to relax! An Adult Day Program may also offer movies and popcorn, sing-alongs, ice cream socials, parties or performances from outside choirs as entertainment.

Other Activity Ideas

It's not always easy to keep seniors motivated in an activity, but here are a few more ways to keep them interested:
  1. Pets: Also known as animal-assisted therapy, this therapeutic use of pets helps seniors relieve stress and enjoy the company of a trained animal at the day care center. These pets help senior citizens achieve specific social, cognitive and emotional goals. Pet therapy has been known to lower blood pressure and release endorphins, which helps suppress pain.

  2. Taking pictures: By using digital cameras and a printer, seniors can take pictures of others and events and turn them into scrapbooks or slideshows.

  3. Modeling clay or Play-Doh: This type of activity is good for keeping hands busy and limber and for stimulating the mind. Clean up is easy and the cost of the products is relatively cheap.
