I love your old house and so glad you did not sustain more damage. It could have been so bad! This lens is so beautifully done, and blessed again!

We live in a Brownstone built in 1918. Thanksfully it had been rewired to acommodate all of the modern luxuries we all enjoy. We are, however, starting the long and arduous process of restoring it to all its former glory. At least in the interior paint colors. Our original hardwood was not in good enough condition to finish once the wall to wall carpet was pulled up.

I lived in an old house wired for 10 amps of electricity and was running a computer and other items while living there. Needless to say 10 amps is not near enough for all teh modern appliances we use. I had a contractor working on teh house and he noticed the problem and the landlord refused to fix it. I moved and was spared the experience of a fire, scary situation I am glad to have avoided.

Nice reporting! This lens blessed by a Squid Angel.

Wonderful story ... I was captivated by it, especially your sister's journal entries.

This is a great lens! I'm sorry your sister and her family had to go through this but hopefully it will prevent others from having the same thing happen. I wish them the best of luck and much happiness in the future. Thank you for calling my attention to this lens via your comment on "You know you own an old house when..." A pleasure to "meet" you and your family.

Even a small fire can create a tangle of repair issues and a mess of a home and life. It's good that the home is now safer and updated, but sad that the kitty is gone and your sister was displaced from her home for so long. That plumber and code inspector are typical, aren't they? One taking advantage, the other not paying attention ... sadly it is the story too many people tell. As for the insurance company, well, their action says a lot about the quality of their reputation. Best wishes to all in the newly fixed old home, and thanks for sharing the journal of recovery and repair with us on this lens.

What an ordeal. It was a good idea to keep a diary. We live in a 1926 house, and had to have most of our electrical system upgraded when we went solar. There are still a few original wires throughout the house that need to be replaced and I'll be relieved when that happens. Thanks for sharing the day-to-day process of rebounding from a disaster. I'm sorry about the loss of your beautiful Nellie.

Wow what an ordeal for your sister! Glad she is OK and the house is finally back to normal...well maybe better than normal. Dropping off a Cupid Kiss for Valentines Day.

Hello, all--I'm the sister who had the house fire last year and I wanted to tell you how much I've enjoyed the comments on my sister Virginia's lens about it. Who knew that my random postings on Facebook and email could be turned into a coherent account! Updates: the plumber threatened me with a lawsuit, so I paid for their work on the frozen pipes in spite of it being their fault. Hiring a lawyer and going to court was bound to get expensive. And in December of this year, I was notified by Farmers Insurance that they were cancelling my homeowner's insurance effective the end of January. I've had to obtain more expensive insurance through my state's FAIR insurance program. That's the last-ditch insurance you can only get if you are shut out of the private insurance market. :-( But the saddest outcome was the loss of our cat Nellie shortly before Thanksgiving of this year. She was asthmatic and never really recovered from the smoke inhalation, even with regular steroid shots to help her with her breathing. We miss her terribly. She came to live with us when we bought the house in 2000 and she was about a year old. But my daughter and I certainly enjoy the house with its fresh paint, newly revealed hardwood floors, and safe wiring. Thanks again for your kind comments!

Hi, Sis, thanks for dropping by and giving an update. I'll go ahead and put the details you've added into the journal section of the webpage so readers can see them in sequence.

Excellent lens. The house reminds me of the house next door to where I lived in South Bend. They were all built in the 1920's. Lensrolled to my One Hundred Years Ago lens.

I do hope the Vaastu Shastra is working for you now - beautifully told story

Wow - a detailed and well written journal, with analysis and other stuff too. Beautiful. I am glad that you were able to move back into your home, and sincerely hope that you got all the paperwork and beaurocrats sorted. We had a beautiful old Thatched pub, The Plough, burn down a year or so back in Northolt, due also to similar wiring faults. It was a total loss, and had to be cleared away.

So beautifully presented lens. I'm really happy that's everything well now...and the house looks beautiful after all hard work/restoration was done.

I am so sorry to hear about your sister's fire but glad that she is able to have it restored. I love old houses.

Sorry about the fire, but it looks like you have pulled things together. A well laid out lens full of information and you tie in the history of the year the house was built very well. Thank you.

Very nice presentation - both with personal experience (the one of your sister) and with references and related stuff. I definitely appreciate this type of page!
    Blessed by a SquidAngel.
