Too Long and Too Suddenly Ended
That is one of the criticisms leveled at the way we pick presidential candidates. The critic is Michael Barone, one of the most respected political commentators around. The votes cast in the general election of November 2006 weren't all counted, no less certified, before presidential hopefuls began announcing their intention of forming exploratory committees, or even announcing a full-fledged campaign. Since this will be the first presidential election in 80 years in which neither the incumbent president nor the incumbent vice president will be running, it should be a wild ride.
