I'm finally, after years of owning a guitar, learning to play it. I just couldn't figure out how to read those chords or get my fingers to go where I wanted them to stay on the strings. So when I found out about karaoke several years back, I started singing my favorite classic country songs on my karaoke player. But, still, I've always wanted to play guitar. Now that two of my teen boys are teaching themselves to play guitar, I'm jumping on board and finally getting the hang of it. Come read more about my favorite guitar and how I'm learning to play it. We get a lot of guitar teaching books and videos at Amazon or our library. If your library doesn't have what you want, try the library interloan system, where they can order it on loan for you from another library. Learning to play a musical instrument takes, time, dedication and lots of practice, but is so much fun and worth it when you can play for yourself, family and friends! So have fun.

Teach Yourself to Play DISCOVERING THE GUITAR

This book is written for children, but I found it really helpful starting out as it shows close-up photos of where to put your fingers when playing guitar chords and simple, familiar 2 and 3 chord songs to play while you are first learning. It also describes the three types of guitars with photos and gives a brief history of the guitar. Photos are clear, black and white.

Huge, hard-cover 256 page book with full colors. Accomplished musician, Tom Fleming guides you in all the basics in 20 step by step lessons. He'll tell you which guitar to buy, and how to pick the right strings and accessories for your guitar. Tuning and caring for your guitar to reading music, guitar chords and tablature and naming the parts of your guitar, as well as a little guitar history thrown in. It's all here in full color. Whether you want to play classical, acoustic or electric, it's all there in this book. Do you wanna rock, or play the blues or is folk or country more your style? Tips on changing chords faster and deciding if you want to play lead or rhythm. Lessons using hit songs of the past 40 years, too! And to top it all off, each chapter features a biographical sketch (with a color photo) of some of the greatest guitar players like: Slash, Buddy Holly, Elvis and more!

My Own Style

My guitar is, I think a 3/4 size and I believe it is a classical one. I read that a classical guitar is supposed to have nylon strings on it and only played with your fingers. But, mine has steel strings and I like using a guitar pick. I've only started recently (about a month ago) begun teaching myself to play it. I have another guitar (full size, blue acoustic one) I bought about 6 years ago, because I liked the way it looks. Looks like I'd look like a real country star with it while wearing my black cowboy hat. I like the sound of my smaller one better, though and just bought a cheap one like it, only blue from ebay. I've also got a black, electric, acoustic one with red roses on it coming. I can't wait to try that one as it will have an amplifier. The boys have electric ones, which when I tried out, seems a lot easier on the fingers, but I'm a country and folk singer and like the sound of the acoustic one better. I like the smaller classical type guitar and the acoustic sound, so if you amplify that with electric, than I guess my favorite guitar is the type I just won on the eBay auction-a classical, electric acoustic guitar.

The Joys of Playing a Musical Instrument

I've learned about 10 guitar chords now, but I have trouble with getting my fingers on the strings for the F and B chords and making it sound right. Fortunately, a lot of the songs I like to do use only a few chords that I can do pretty well, like G,D7,D,G7,C,E and A7. I even found a place on the internet > Change Guitar Key that lets you transpose the chords to a different key. So, if there is a song I find written out with the chords that have the F, that's harder for me to play, I switch it to the key of G by copying the page with the lyrics and chords into a space that I then click on which key I want to change it to. That's so neat! I know, if you are an already experienced player, it's no big deal, but to me,who has wanted to play guitar for so long with no one to teach me, I'm finding this all fascinating to learn. I love music and singing classic country and folk songs and some old rock, too with my karaoke player. Now I've learned to play my guitar along with my singing.

The One For Show, I Don't Play

My Autograph Guitar?

Well, my guitar just came in and even after I tuned it, it doesn't sound quite right! It's very light and cheap, but it should sound better than that. Anyone know why? It's similar to my other 3/4 size but lighter in weight and the neck is slighter wider. Here's a pic of it. Does anyone know if the sound would get better after "breaking it in"?
My 16 year old son just tried the guitar and somehow is making it sound better, but it still doesn't sound quite right. The strings look too big. Maybe a smaller size set of strings? I don't know enough about them yet. Seems to "buzz" too much, and I can't get the higher 3 strings to sound right while trying a D chord. Ouch!

UPDATE: I think I'll give this guitar to one of my teen boys to take when he gets autographs from famous musicians to sign on it. We recently got autographs from "Disturbed" and "Kill, Switch, Engage" (what a name)! They were all really nice.
Upon reading more about the classical guitar, I just realized this blue one I recently purchased on eBay has large, steel strings that are way too high up from the fret board, and should be nylon strings. So, I will order some nylon strings for that and try it out after. I've never tried nylon strings yet. Remember, I'm just learning.

The Electric Acoustic I Ordered

UPDATE!

Here's a pic of the electric, acoustic one I ordered. I haven't received it yet though. I hope it will sound better than the one I just got. It comes with a set of 10 teaching dvd's, too. Got my guitar, and it's just beautiful! I LOVE music and guitars! It had nylon strings, but I restringed it to steel ones. I like the sound better. Even my teen boys(two of them anyways), like to use it once in awhile, but mostly they like their electric guitars. I am practicing a song on guitar that I want to sing at talent night at my church. I tried to even talk my three teen boys to do back up vocals for me (hasn't worked yet). Any suggestions? I found a black western shirt with red roses on it that will go perfect to match my guitar and I already have a black cowgirl hat, so I'm all set to be a country star! After I get the shirt I'll see if I can get a photo of me to put here. I feel like I'm writing a blog! I'm just a beginner but I want to go public. Never done that before, except karaoke, though. Anybody want to do duets with me? I do classic country, old rock and some folk music, but will do most any music.

I Love Bluegrass Gospel Music

Now when I listen to music I notice the guitar sounds more, since I'm playing the guitar myself. I'm trying to pick-up on the chord changing sort of by ear. I found an older cassette tape of Bluegrass Gospel that I like and am learning to play rhythm to it. It's quite fast, so as a beginner my fingers are sore, but I love playing the guitar! They say it stings for a while, but then your fingers build up callouses and get tougher for the job. My fingers are doing just that now.
After I figured out some of the chords, enough to play some songs, I tried to learn the strumming so I can play rhythm. I am mostly doing it by ear to songs I already know, but it was a little difficult at first to read the strum lines on the page and figure it all out. I'm getting the hang of it pretty good now. Not ready for an audience quite yet, but almost. Maybe I'll do a song at my yearly church talent night in March instead of karaoke this next time! I was having a little trouble with the 3/4 beat to strum, where you pick just the top string then strum down twice on the other strings and keep repeating that. I could do it o.k., but I was getting mixed up when I tried to sing with it at the same time. I'm coming along better now. If you really enjoy doing something, then you will stick with it until you get it perfected. I tell my boys if they want to do something really well, to get books and videos and learn everything you can about it until you do it really well. So now I'm taking my own advice.
