HOW TO CHOOSE A MOBILITY SCOOTER

Mobility Scooters are a fantastic way for a person who has limited mobility to regain their sense of independence and freedom. There are many different brands and models of mobility scooters so it is important to understand what factors will help you choose the correct scooter for your personal needs.

Here are the most important points to consider:

  • Your weight: All scooters are rated for maximum weight. Light weight scooters
will handle up to 250 lbs and Heavy
    Duty Mobility Scooters
will handle in excess of 400 lbs. Make sure you
check the manufacturers specifications to make sure it is appropriate for
    you.

  • Your height: Smaller
    Electric Scooters
, particularly travel scooters have very limited clearance
for your legs. Smaller scooters are very easy to transport, lower in cost
and very maneuverable but you definitely sacrifice comfort.

  • Where are you going to use your scooter? If you are going to use your scooter
primarily indoors, you probably want to look at 3 wheel model they have a
much smaller turning radius. If you are going to want to use your scooter
for primarily outdoor use, particularly on uneven terrain you will probably
want to consider a 4 wheel model which provides much greater stability.

  • What type of cruising distance do you need? If you are going to be using
your scooter around town, or around the golf course you might want to consider
a medium or heavy duty scooter which will have a cruising range of up to 30
miles. Smaller units will provide a cruising range of 10 miles.

  • Are you going to need a trunk
    lift
? Smaller light weight scooters can usually be stored in the trunk
of your car. If you are thinking about purchasing a medium or heavy duty scooter
you will want to consider if you are going to need a lift so you can travel
    with your scooter.
  • Can I get any assistance to buy a Lift or carrier?

Medicare does not cover the cost of an automobile lift or ramp. If you have
purchased a new vehicle within the last year, you may be eligible to receive
reimbursement for the cost of your lift or ramp directly from the manufacturer.

You will need to contact the manufacturer of your vehicle directly:

  • FORD: $1000, 1-800-952-2248.

  • CHRYSLER: $750 - $1,000, 1-800-255-9877.

  • GM: $1000, 1-800-323-9935.

  • TOYOTA: $1000, 1-800-331-4331.

  • LEXUS: $1000, 1-800-255-3987.

  • SATURN: 1-800-553-6000.

  • VW: 1-800-374-8389.

  • HONDA: $1,000, 1-888-327-4236.

  • VOLVO: $1,000, 1-800-803-5222.
  • What is the difference between a 3 wheel and a 4 wheel scooter?

The primary difference between the two types of scooters is that 3 wheel scooters have a better turning radius and 4 wheel scooters tend to be more stable. The benefit of a 3 wheel scooter is superior maneuverability which will be most apparent in a house, apartment or similar confined area. Four-wheeled scooters were originally developed to provide more stable operation when traveling on slopes or uneven terrain, however many of the newer models of 3-wheeled scooters offer an optimized center of balance which provides excellent stability.

How should I select the right scooter for my height and weight?

Every scooter has a clear list of manufacturer specifications. When you are comparing scooters, make sure your confirm the maximum weight for any scooter that you are considering. You should also consider the overall length of the scooter based on your height. If your height is under 5' 5", you should consider scooters that have an overall length of 42 inches or less. People who are taller than 5' 5" typically require longer models that offer more leg room in order to provide safe, comfortable operation. to ensure ample leg room. If you have any medical conditions that limit your ability to turn or move your legs, you will need to make sure the model you are considering has sufficient leg room to assure comfortable operation.

Are there any options available for scooters?

Depending on your needs, you can usually find variety of accessories that will make your scooter a perfect mobility solution. A variety of special sized seats and seat options also are available to ensure safety and comfort. Most scooters can also be equipped with baskets, reachers, and other accessories to help improve your mobility and function. If you want to use your scooter on rough terrain, you might want to use larger tires. Seating may be the most critical yet most often overlooked aspect of getting a scooter. As you spend more time on your scooter, you will quickly realize how important comfortable seating is. Make sure you consider the seat and your posture if you find yourself spending a majority of your time in your scooter. DO NOT SKIMP on upgrading the seat or changing to a new cushion (foam padding, gel-filled, etc). Pressure sores can be very serious. Make sure you are aware of any breakdown of your skin and consult your therapist or physician immediately if you have any symptoms.
