Electrical Discharge Machining, Wire EDM Machine, EDM Supplies

Click here to find out more about electrical discharge machining.
Can you imagine trying to make hollow ball bearings? That is what two Russian scientists were attempting to do when they began the development of what was to become electrical discharge machining. Eventually another type of electrical discharge machine (EDM) was invented: the wire EDM machine. Of course, both of these machines require EDM supplies in order to operate.
A modern injection mold making or precision metal stamping shop uses both of these machines extensively. If you were to look around you, it becomes evident that all these plastic and metal products that we use daily came from some kind of manufacturing factory.
Inside this factory are lots of machines that crank out plastic an metal parts all day and all night. These machines use dies and molds to produce the cell phones, keyboards, car parts, refrigerators, dishwashers, pens, cd players and on and on and on.
Besides the EDM machines, there are high speed milling machines and various types of precision tooling that are part of the process. The milling machine uses carbide cutters to cut the steel and graphite needed to make the molds and dies. There has to be an extensive inspection department as well, complete with granite surface plates, drop indicators, test indicators, optical comparators, CMM's, and gage block sets.
There are many EDM jobs that are related as well. Somebody has be the mold designer, EDM operator, CMM operator, milling machine operator and so on.
These EDM machines are actually very sophisticated pieces of equipment. They come with automatic tool changers, pallet changers and use complicated CAD/CAM software to do their work.
Randy Hough has a website: http://CompleteEDM.com that talks about the wire EDM machine.
