I am one of those overweight people but I live in a small town but to get to the one area across town would be a lot harder on a regular bike than a electric bike. I mainly only need the electric assist is for getting up the hills. I ride a bike at the gym all the time but I don't go any where. I also cannot drive a car and have a need to go places in town. Appointments, shopping, errands. I could do it all in a electric bike. I love riding a manual bike but I can only go so far at a slower speed but with electric bike I could get there a bit faster. I highly doubt I would not pedal while on a bike its just second nature. I don't like scooters for that reason I need to pedal because I have a balance problem and pedaling helps that. Plus I am helping the enviroment.

I wanted an electric vehicle. I wanted to get away from gas. We will run out of oil one day. Then what are going to do? Kill each other? For a battery to motor system it requires a light vehicle. A four wheel car is a lot heavier than something on 2 wheels. So an electric bike is the perfect solution. Plus I love riding a bike. I love riding passed gas stations and having people watch me zoom passed them as I go by. I wish more people would ride them. They are the best ride going for the buck!

Hey Ben, thanks for your post. Nice to hear you are leaning on the environmental responsibility side. Just bear a thought for some people who can't ride a conventional bike (knee injuries, arthritis etc.) or who would love to ride but don't have the facility to get changed at work. I would much prefer to see these people cruising along on an environmentally friendly electric bike than taking the car. Electric bikes do have a place in our society.

Ben says:

If you ride an electric bike, it's because you're lazy. Plain and simple. Nothing is more eco-friendly than a traditional bike. Stupid fat people who don't like hills.

you dont get mad because of bad traffic and you feel a nice breeze.

Environmental responsibility is more important for me. Why guzzle gas on short trips when you can have a lot more fun getting there on two wheels - with very little impact on the environment.

The need to save money

Eric Riebau says:

To give me less of a feeling that I'm relying on something to get me where I need to go. And if something goes wrong on an electric bike they are 1/20th the price of a car brand new. Adding up everything, (car payments, insurance, gas, maintenance, and useless trips) ill be saving $450/month.

Great job on the post! Very thorough without putting me to sleeep. I appreciate your work.

I am starting a blog, on Jan1,09 at www.velochef.com , please visit, and by-all-means please contribute with your writing. As you'll see the blog is to support the new and evolving cyclist who woants or needs to have assistance from some kind of motor. The lwas for this as much more relaxed here in theUS, so even a bicycle with 750 Watts is within the law, as long as it doesn't exceet 20mph. A petrol fueled motor, <50CC, and can be pedalled is also OK.

All that said, I'd be delighted to have you participate in this blog, as it's definietly going to help many people get over the uncertainty of getting into electric cycling (bikes&trikes).

Take care, and please stop by

E-bikes provide a safe environment that motor vehicles do not. They help promote a socially-active, viable community. Check out this site - http://www.streetfilms.org/

You can't ignore the fact that gas prices are skyrocketing. Electric bikes may be what we need to keep us all moving.
