Third Era Electricity

Developments in Electricity

"Ere many generations pass, our machinery will be driven by a power obtainable

at any point in the universe.  This idea in not novel...We find it in the delightful

myth of Antheus, who derives power from the earth; we find it among the subtle

speculations of one of your splendid mathematicians...

Throughout space there is energy . Is this energy static or kinetic?

If static our hopes are in vain; if kinetic - and this we know it is, for certain -

then it is a mere question of time when men will succeed in attaching their machinery

to the very wheelwork of nature."

-Nikola Tesla addressing the American Institute of Electrical Engineers, 1891
Tesla, Man Out of Time, Margaret Cheney, Prentice-Hall, 1981, ISBN 0-13906859-7

Is man now in a third era of electricity production?  Are we approaching the "very wheelwork of Nature" in new energy sources?  Nanotechnology materials production grows. Solar, wind, and subatomic chemisty launch what may be another revolution, turn of the worm.

First it was Bell and Edison. Then Tesla wrecked the expected electricity landscape with his discovery of alternating current.  When the Niagara Falls Power Commission decided to go with Tesla and Westinghouse over Edison's direct current transmission plans, the history of electricity was forever changed.  Tesla's creation harvested tremendous amounts of hydropower from the mighty Niagara Falls and transmitted electricity to the City of Buffalo. Lights on folks.

Tesla's colorful reference to Antheus helps one picture his friendship with Mark Twain. Science and poetry had  everyihng to do with each other in Tesla's vision.  Antheus (Latin: Antaeus) was a son of Zeus and Gaia, deriving his energy from his contact with earth. He regularly thumped Hercules (Latin: Heracles,) bowling him to the ground. Hercules finally conquered his tormentor by lifting Antheus up in a bear hug, draining his power while in the air.

Electricity: history and future

energy from nature

Can we ever underestimate science's impact on everyday life? From Ben Franklin to the era of electric companies to the era of electricity from sun, wind, plasma, and nanotechnology. Electricity production and use is morphing again.

CIGS Thin Film Solar Technology

Next Wave Solar

Circuits can now be printed on paper. Nanotechnology has brought some remarkable changes to solar technology. Perhaps it would be a good idea to wait a bit to get your pile of panels. Visit:nanosolar to see what is just around the corner.

The new big is very, very small

Nanotechnology

Nanotechnology is going to change nearly every type of material as we know it, from glass, to solar technology, to steel, to plastics, in medicine, in buildings. The subject is huge, and the nanometer so tiny.

Scientists are now manipulating molecules at the sub-atomic level. Astonishing results are already being used in material production. The future of green building, architecture, medicine and many disciplines are being affected by these developments.

You can already buy nano-chips to add to paint to increase wall insulation.

Solar power is a fast changing technology

When you consider CIGs, thin film and nanotechnology advancements, it might be worth taking your time before installing too much solar in colder, snowy climates. But one thing does work really well up north, solar hot water.

Electric Vehicles

Golf Carts on Steroids

Can the Electric Cab co. be far off?We already know that the electric hybrids and fully electric vehicles are here. The Chevy Volt is imminent. Electric vehicles, often referred to as EVs,
or LSVs (low speed vehicles) are used to some extent already. The golf cart being the one most familiar to people. Country clubs charge them at night, as the rate is lower. But why plug them in at all if they could be charged by wind and solar power?

Imagine the local gas station. Unleaded $2.65 (if were lucky), and electricity, 0.17 (and that would leave a huge profit for the gas station owner as well as the consumer, especially if the gas station were to be using wind and solar power to power itself. There will always be the deisel pump. and jet fuel is a necessity in a world with evil in it. But there will also probably be another hybrid pump, either "biofuel" or "syngas" of some sort. To some extent, it will depend on the cars created, military and private r&d, and what consumers want.

Gas cabs could be dramatically undersold by electric cabs based on fuel differential alone.

Electric Cars

Yesterdays and Tomorrows

Detroit put out an electric car that was a favorite with the ladies at the turn of the 20ht century. 100 years later we are about to produce really great ones. Ford to Tesla. Same names, new electric cars.

Plasma, the fourth state of matter

The idea of gas plasmafication has been around for a while. Tesla had some original thoughts on the matter, but many forces have prevented this idea from taking off in the market place. A plant in which to plasmify garbage is extremely costly to construct. At the time of his death Tesla was working on an apparatus to weaponize the concept. Many have been chasing the answer to the riddles Tesla left ever since.

Will electricity ever go down in price?

    Extremely insightful lens here.

I do hope that the electricity will go down in price soon.

Well, it depends on who owns the power source. But as long as it is still so poluting, I hope not
