The History Of Electrolysis Hair Removal

The origins of electro epilation (or electrolysis hair removal as it's more commonly known as today) were pioneered in 1875 by an ophthalmologist, Dr Charles Michel, in St Louis, Missouri, America. Dr Michel found that by inserting a needle charged with a negative galvanic current into a hair follicle, he was able to remove ingrowing eye-lashes permanently. It was initially thought that the hairs had been electrocuted, but it was subsequently established that using a direct electrical current in a solution of saline water caused the water and salt to divide into their chemical elements and then quickly rearrange themselves to form new substances. Namely sodium hydroxide - a strong caustic alkali which chemically decomposed the hairgrowth - and hydrochloric acid. This process was termed 'electrolysis'.

Hair Electrolysis Evolves

Then in 1895, the first training course for electrolysis was written by Daniel Mahler of Rhode Island, America.

In 1916 the multiple needle technique was introduced, invented by Professor Paul Kree. This technique allowed as many as 10 needles to be inserted simultaneously into hair follicles, which revolutionized the previously slow process of electrolysis and made it a more practical method of treatment for hair removal.

In 1924, a new method of electrolysis was introduced by Dr Henry Bordier, in Lyons, France. He pioneered the use of shortwave diathermy to remove unwanted hair growth. This proved to be a much quicker method of hair removal even when compared with the Kree multiple needle technique, and soon superseded galvanic.

Over the next 20 years shortwave diathermy technology continued to advance, with the introduction of a new high frequency alternating current during the 1940s. This new type of machine proved to be a more reliable method of hair removal and helped to firmly establish shortwave diathermy as the market leader.

In 1945, Arthur R. Hinkle and Henri E. St Pierre patented the first combination current machine called the blend. This method of electrolysis became firmly established in America, and was not generally introduced to England until the 1980s, although one or two prominent electrologists did undertake its use and begin training programs. It was only during the mid 1990's that it became more widely used within salons.
