An Intro And Review of Electronic Cigarettes

As cities and towns around the world ban smoking, a new device has come out that promises to make quitting smoking easier and safer. It's called the electronic cigarette. In this lens, we will explore whether the electronic cigarette is a true alternative to smoking or just a bunch of "hot air.'

What is an Electronic Cigarette?

From Wikipredia...

An e-cigarette (or e-cig) is an alternative to the cigarette, providing small amounts of the chemical nicotine with each inhalation.

The device takes the form of a tiny rod which is slightly longer than a normal cigarette. The mouthpiece of the device contains a replaceable cartridge filled with liquid. In the patent pending version of the e-cigarette, the main substances contained in the liquid are nicotine, propylene glycol, and optional flavours or aromas.[1][2]

When the user inhales through the device, the air flow is detected by a sensor. A microprocessor then activates a piezoelectric nebulizer (popularized by the industry as an atomizer), which injects tiny droplets of the liquid into the flowing air and vapourises the nicotine.[1] This produces a vapor mist which is inhaled by the user. The addition of propylene glycol to the liquid makes the mist better resemble normal cigarette smoke. The microprocessor also activates an orange LED at the tip to simulate real smoking.

E-cigarettes generally use a rechargeable battery as a power source. Battery life varies between devices, with some lasting a day between charges,[3] and others lasting a week.[4]

Developed in China by Hon Lik of Ruyan,[5] the technology is patent pending worldwide.[6] A number of OEM's and importers offer different varieties of e-cigarettes for sale in various countries, it is not known if these hold a patent license, work around the patent claims, or are simply ignoring the patent.

World Health Organization Critical of Electronic Cigarettes

In September 2008, the World Health Orgaization came out with the following statement condemning electronic cigarettes. "It is of great concern that certain manufacturers of these cigarettes around the world have included WHO's name, for example on their Web (sites) or on their package inserts or on their advertisements, as having endorsed these products."

He adds, "Also there's no experience in pharmacology yet of nicotine replacement therapies which actually inhale nicotine into the lungs." Bettcher comments that replacement therapies, such as skin patches, candies, inhalers, and nasal sprays, have been proven safe to use based on clinical trials and scientific tests."

WHO officials have sent letters to manufacturers of electronic cigarettes asking them to remove its name and logo from their marketing campaigns.

Bettcher adds, "If the marketers of the electronic cigarette want to help smokers quit, then they need to conduct clinical studies and toxicity analyses and operate within the proper regulatory framework. Until they do that, WHO cannot consider the electronic cigarette to be an appropriate nicotine replacement therapy, and it certainly cannot accept false suggestions that it has approved and endorsed the product.
