Every Chinese zodiac is associated with one of four elements (water, metal, earth, fire). Monday, January 23, 2012 marks the beginning of the year of the water dragon. Each dragon has special characteristics that reflect what might happen in the year ahead. People born during that year also take on those characteristics. Some people celebrating the Chinese New Year like to tailor Chinese New Year gifts based on the Chinese zodiac.

Metal Dragons

Metal dragons are stubborn, combative, and ruthless. Oddly enough, people born during a metal dragon year often end up being leaders. In the end though, they lose support for alienating others. Metal dragon years can be quite difficult.

Wood Dragon

Wood dragons are pretty amazing. They are creative, logical, and inquisitive. They are strong leaders without having to use force or exerting their dominance. That being said, this dragon is still fairly outspoken. If he or she is ever challenged, watch out. Wood dragons are fearless.

Earth Dragons

Earth dragons are more pleasant than other dragons because they're quieter yet quite mighty. They are not quick to anger and are more prone to compromise. Earth dragons are more diplomatic. Don't mistake them for push overs. They demand respect, but that's also easily earned. Earth dragons are also very ambitious with carefully thought out initiatives.

2012 Water Dragon

Water dragons are less developed than other dragons. This dragon has a lot to learn and even a bit naive. He/she is very happy, and sometimes overly optimistic. That being said, water dragons are great negotiators, nor are they power hungry.

2012 is a year for change, that's true. For many, changes will be swift and happy. But others can expect things to rocky since dragons are also known to be quite impulsive. We can expect to experience some difficult moments at the beginning of the year. Others may experience quite the opposite filled with many happy moments. It really depends on their birth element. The latter part of the year is said to be much calmer and happier. The hardships and crinkles of earlier in the year will have been ironed out. This year is also a transition year, hence the compromise of the water dragon. People celebrate the hope of a new and happy Chinese New Year.
