Asthma and Allergies

Asthma and allergy symptoms are an over-reaction by your body's immune system to harmless environmental substances, commonly referred to as 'allergens'. The body works on a threshold-basis, which means that your body only shows symptoms when your level of exposure to allergens is above its ability to adequately manage the exposures. For example, you might notice that sometimes you are allergic to cats and sometimes you don't react. However, when it is spring and blooming plants are releasing their pollens, you might notice that you are especially sensitive to being around even a cat that lives exclusively indoors and isn't carrying pollen in its fur.

Often times symptoms such as wheezing, coughing, tightness of the chest, runny nose, sneezing, and itchy eyes are caused by environmental factors including dust, pets, foods, flowers, and grasses. This process is an overreaction by your immune system to certain environmental triggers, and is known as a hyper-sensitivity reaction.
