Joseph Merrick was the original Elephant Man -- but there is more than one elephant man

Known as the ORIGINAL Elephant Man, Joseph Merrick was initially diagnosed with a condition interestingly named Elephantiasis. It took nearly one century for a different diagnosis of Neurofibromatosis which today is still thought to be an incorrect diagnosis of Joseph Merrick's condition. Neurofibromatosis subsequently has often been incorrectly labeled as "the elephant man disease" even today!

The current medical diagnosis of the disease that most likely afflicted Joseph Merrick is Proteus syndrome. Today, throughout the world, there are other Elephant Men!

More about Joseph Merrick

The original Elephant Man ...

Joseph Carey Merrick (5 August 1862 ? 11 April 1890) was an Englishman who became known as "The Elephant Man" because of his physical appearance caused by a congenital disorder. Because of his condition, he would garner the sympathy of Victorian Britain. He has often been incorrectly called John Merrick.

Not Elephantiasis!

It took 100 years for doctors to correctly identify his medical condition.

More about The Elephant Man (film)

Starring John Hurt as Joseph Merrick

The Elephant Man is a American film based on the story of Joseph Merrick (called John Merrick in the film), a severely deformed man in 19th century London. The film was directed by David Lynch and stars John Hurt, Anthony Hopkins, Anne Bancroft, John Gielgud, Wendy Hiller, Michael Elphick, Hannah Gordon and Freddie Jones.

The screenplay was adapted by Lynch, Christopher De Vore, and Eric Bergren from the books The Elephant Man and Other Reminiscences (1923) by Sir Frederick Treves and The Elephant Man: A Study in Human Dignity by Ashley Montagu. It was shot in black-and-white.

The Elephant Man was recognized as a critical and commercial success, and received eight Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture in 1981.

You could only see his eyes behind the layers of makeup, but those expressive orbs earned John Hurt a well-deserved Oscar nomination for his moving portrayal of John Merrick, the grotesquely deformed Victorian-era man better known as The Elephant Man. Inarticulate and abused, Merrick is the virtual slave of a carnival barker (Freddie Jones) until dedicated London doctor Frederick Treves (Anthony Hopkins in a powerfully understated performance) rescues him from the life and offers him an existence with dignity. Anne Bancroft costars as the actress whose visit to Merrick makes him a social curiosity, with John Gielgud and Wendy Hiller as dubious hospital staffers won over by Merrick.

David Lynch earned his only Oscar nominations as director and cowriter of this somber drama, which he shot in a rich black-and-white palette, a sometimes stark, sometimes dreamy visual style that at times recalls the offbeat expressionism of his first film, Eraserhead. It remains a perfect marriage between traditional Hollywood historical drama and Lynch's unique cinematic eye, a compassionate human tale delivered in a gothic vein. The film earned eight Oscar nominations in all, and though it left the Oscar race empty-handed, its dramatic power and handsome yet haunting imagery remain just as strong today. --Sean Axmaker

Diagnosis: Proteus syndrome ...

It wasn't until 1996 that the answer to what affected Merrick was found.

A radiologist, Amita Sharma, of the National Institutes of Health examined x-rays and CT scans of Merrick's skeleton (kept at the Royal London Hospital since his death).

Dr. Sharma determined that Merrick had Proteus syndrome, an extremely rare disorder, itself only identified in 1979.
