Elfen Lied Review

If you like action/horror anime, Elfen Lied is a must own. Based on the manga by Lynn Okamoto, Elfen Lied (German for "Elf Song") is a 13 episode action/horror/romance anime that stays fairly canonical to the first 6 volumes of the manga for the first 11 episodes and then diverges to tie up loose ends for the final two episodes.

A pink haired Diclonius named Lucy breaks free from her confinement, wrecks havoc on the facility's staff, and escapes. The next day, two college-aged cousins, Yuka and Kouta, discover the girl on the beach, but her personality was transformed from a menacing killer to that of an innocent and virtually helpless child. Not sure what to do, the cousins take her home with them and become intertwined in the government's attempt to retrieve one of its deadliest weapons.

Lucy/Nyu is a Diclonius, a genetically altered human with a deadly set of extra hands (or vectors) that can vibrate at high frequencies and cut through just about anything like it was butter. Visually, what sets Diclonius apart from normal humans is a set of horns, that almost look like cat ears, growing atop their head.

As Nyu adjusts to her new life with the cousins, trouble is brewing in the form of a Diclonius named Nana who is put in charge of retrieving her rival. After a showdown between the two Diconius, Nana becomes the next member of Kouta's residence. When Kouta takes in a teenage homeless girl named Mayu, who ran away because her stepfather abused her, their small family is complete.

Elfen Lied does a fantastic job of balancing the romantic tension between Kouta and his girls with the menacing violence the Diclonius are capable of and engage in. The transition from the loveable Nyu to the chilling Lucy is well done - whenever Lucy emerges, you see a single, glaring eye emerging from behind her hair - and the gore, while explicit, is not overly done.

Elfen Lied also has a fantastic musical score, starting with "Lilium," which almost sounds like a Church hymn and is sung in Latin. The theme is interspersed throughout the anime at key points, sometimes as an instrumental piece, other times with a Gregorian chorus. Must of the score is instrumental which can be gentle or intense depending on the scene. Finally, the closing theme, "Be Your Girl" is an upbeat, J-pop/punk tune.

I highly recommend this anime. Though it's a bit of an emotional roller coaster - I was in tears through the final episode, and I rarely cry while watching anime - it has some of the most interesting characters, fantastic artwork, a beautiful score, and a compelling plot.

Bios - Kouta

Kouta is an 18-year-old student who rents an old inn from his cousin, Yuka's family, while he studies at the university. He's a kind hearted boy who has a soft spot for girls in need and is always quick to lend a hand when he can. His always ready to help mentality seems to stem from a family tragedy where he lost his father and beloved little sister, Kanae, in a freak accident. The events were so horrific that Kouta blocked out the details and suffers situational amnesia.

Bios - Kurama

Director Kurama is the chief of diclonius research at the research containment facility where Lucy escapes from. He is the biological father of diclonius, Mariko, who he refused to kill after birth as his dying wife's last wish. To compensate, he became a surrogate father of the diclonius, Nana.

Bios - Lucy

Lucy is a teenage diclonius about 18 years of age who escapes form the research containment facility. Lucy is deadly with her four vectors that can kill virtually anything she wishes. As a child, Lucy was picked on and bullied for having horns. Now, she has no love for humans and kills without guilt or empathy.

Bios - Mayu

Mayu is a young teenage girl who Kouta finds living alone at the beach. Mayu is extremely kind hearted given that she ran away from an abusive family where her stepfather sexually molested her and her mother did nothing to aid her. To escape the situation, Mayu ran away and lived under an umbrella at the beach with her only friend, an adorable puppy named Wanta. When Kouta found her, he invited her to stay with Yuka and him, officially becoming her guardian and putting her in a local school.

Bios - Nana

Known as Number 7, Nana is a silpelit (a diclonius that reproduces by infecting humans with the Diclonius virus via her vectors), who looks about the same age as Mayu and the two become quick friends. Though most diclonius are killed after birth, Kurama let Nana live and became a surrogate father to her. When Lucy escaped, she was the diclonius who was sent out after her, but when she failed to bring Lucy back, Director Kakuzawa ordered her death. Kurama disobeyed his orders and set her free, and Nana quickly found her way to Kouta's inn and became a member of the family. Nana can temporarily disable the vectors of other Diclonius and she has 3 meter reach with her vectors.

Bios - Nyu

Nyu is Lucy's alternate personality, who can only speak her name and has a toddler's view of the world, as if she refuses to remember the horrors that Lucy has caused and has regressed to a state of innocent childhood.

Bios - Yuka

Yuka is Kouta's cousin who lives with him at the inn. She's had a crush on Kouta since they were kids is quick to become jealous when Kouta devotes his time to other girls in need.
