Elfwood vs. Deviant Art

In one corner: Elfwood, the underdog champion of original fantasy and science fiction art and fiction! This website brings Lucky-13 years of quiet growth and development to the ring. Will it be enough?

In the other corner: DeviantArt, the massive heavyweight champion of art on the Web! Known for taking on all competitors, this giant will eat amateurs alive!

Picture creds: Elfwood, DeviantArt, Amazon.

About Elfwood

My Lens about Elfwood

"Elfwood's mission is to provide a place for amateurs from all over the world to share, teach, and inspire a new generation of dreams."
Of course, Elfwood isn't just a bunch of amateurs. The talent on Elfwood ranges from excellent to...pretty amateurish, sure...but some Elfwood members are actually professional artists and authors for whom Elfwood is a springboard and peer-critique forum for their fantasy work.

About DeviantArt

Angelo Sotira launched DeviantArt in August of 2000, making it a relative youngster compared to Elfwood. Rather than focus on a single genre of art, they have fantasy, still-life pictures, photographs. You name it and you might be able to find it at DeviantArt.

You can find a slightly disjointed history of DeviantArt and information about its staff. It involves a near-collapse due to legal issues and a Phoenix-like resurgence. Dramatic stuff.

They also sell prints of their art if members give them permission.

DeviantART. I tried Elfwood, and while it looks like it could be nice, it is not as easy to use and every pictrue is moderated before going up - which is fine, but can seriously slow things down and they had soem huge issues with mod opinions (ie is meant to be a fantasy gallery only)... I opened mine fine, then suddenly all my new pictures were being denied because of my *username*

But yes, DA is my main gallery, I've tried others but go back to DA.

My daughter is active on Deviantart, so will have to choose that one :)

Good with both art and computers?

Try combining the two!

As you browse DeviantArt and Elfwood, you'll inevitably see pictures that have been created on the computer. One of the biggest misconceptions of computer-generated art is that it is easier to create than traditional-media art.
Trust me, it's not. Computer-generated art requires talent with both computers and art; and most professional-quality computer-art programs look intimidating at first glance.
Don't believe me? Pick up these books and try your hand at your own computer-generated art!
