It means that when you are traveling or thinking of setting up residence in a new city, you should do your research and put some preventative measures in place to avoid bed bugs from taking over your life. From my personal experience, I had come across a few bites on my arms and legs one morning. I thought they were just rashes or some little bite from some spider or other little insect that found it's way to my skin. Even when nothing was biting me I still scratched my head and skin in paranoia thinking they were crawling all over me. The following morning I pondered for a second trying to figure out how I was going to deal with this and decided the best thing to do was tell my landlord. I was not sure if he was going to blame me for bringing them in but I knew it was something I had to do before they got out of control. To my surprise my landlord was very understanding and stated it was a very huge problem in my area and in the building I was living in. He immediately took care of the problem to my relief and thankfully I have not seen another bed bug since. To this day I still inspect my bed and vacuum constantly the mattresses and surrounding area for fear of their return. The whole experience affected me very badly. I lacked sleep knowing that I had invaders in my bed, I tried to sleep with the light on because I knew they only came out of their hiding spot when it was dark, I always felt itchy, became irritable from the lack of sleep and was afraid to have company around me for fear that I would expose them to this terrible invasion.

Even though I was fortunate enough to live in a building that dealt with the problem, I still had to take precautionary measures to protect myself and my personal contents so that the problem did not return. The problem with living in an apartment whether it be a condo, low rise or high rise is that pests can crawl through the walls from unit to unit.
