Pedal Car, Pedal Cars, Ride On Toys

Pedal Cars have been around since the 1890's not to long after the automobile came out. Pedal cars were modeled after the real cars that were on the road at that time. Pedal cars also known as ride on toys were one of the main items a kid wanted at that time.

One problem at the turn of the century, after the financial devastation of the great depression was the cost was so high that only the wealthy could afford one. They were only for the upper class children. All the other kids played with their basic homemade ride on toys.

In the mid 1940's no pedal cars were made because they were made of metal and all the metal was directed to the World War II efforts. In the 1950's and 1960's the popularity came back and they started producing the chain-driven models.

The Pedal car models then came with some features like working horns and lights, movable windshields and ragtops, chrome detailing and hood ornaments, and of course white wall tires and custom paint jobs.

Later after the manufacturers realize that the popularity of Pedal Cars were strong they started producing Pedal planes, pedal trains, pedal trucks, tractors, jeeps and tricycles allowing the children to once again imitate the actions of their elders.

In the 1970's the manufacturers started making the pedal cars in plastic but they just were and still not the quality of the metal pedal cars.

No matter what time in history kids always have and still today love to play with the pedal cars. Today pedal cars still come in plastic as well as metal but as you can see, the fun remains the same.
