Elizabeth Taylor in National Velvet, A Movie Review

If you have never seen Elizabeth Taylor in National Velvet then it is time to add it to your collection. This movie, released in 1944, is still captivating after all these years. It is the story of poor, young Velvet Brown who wins an unruly but talented horse that she calls The Pie. A homeless horse trainer happens by and helps her train Pie for England's Grand National Sweepstakes Race. National Velvet is a movie that the whole family can watch and parents will not have to worry about any unpleasant surprises. Elizabeth Taylor made National Velvet when she was just 12 and many movie goers fell in love with her after watching this movie. Her character, Velvet Brown, is a sweet, adorable girl. I still like watching this movie now and then. I think it is her best movie.

National Velvet

Amazon customer review: "This movie is not about a girl, or her love for horses. Nor is it about a young man who is about to go down the wrong path. This movie is about faith, hope, and love, with a dash of humility thrown in. It sets a high standard -- how to win people by trusting them, and treating them with respect. I love this movie. I'm 57 years old and have just seen it for the first time. I don't know why I didn't see it sooner. I certainly wish I had. " ~ Lenton K. Goforth

Elizabeth Taylor's Big Break

"It was Taylor's persistence in campaigning for the role of Velvet Brown in MGM's National Velvet that skyrocketed Taylor to stardom at the tender age of 12. Taylor's character, Velvet Brown, is a young girl who trains her beloved horse to win the Grand National. National Velvet, which also costarred beloved American favorite Mickey Rooney and English newcomer Angela Lansbury, became an overwhelming success upon its release in December 1944 and altered Taylor's life forever. Also, many of her back problems have been traced to when she hurt her back falling off a horse during the filming of National Velvet.

National Velvet grossed over US $4 million at the box office and Taylor was signed to a new long-term contract that raised her salary to $30,000 per year. To capitalize on the box office success of Velvet, Taylor was shoved into another animal opus, Courage of Lassie, in which a different dog named "Bill", cast as an Allied combatant in World War II, regularly outsmarts the Nazis, with Taylor going through another outdoors role"

Book and Charm

Amazon Customer Review "So in one sense, yes, this is the story of a young girl and her love of a horse. And it is thrilling on that level. It is also the story of a society that cannot ever exist again, but that, for all its restrictions, was ruled by love of family and a strong sense of right and wrong. And third, it is the triumphant story, long before feminism was in vogue, of one small woman who overcomes centuries of prejudice to become a champion. What else does one need?" ~ W. Carol

This is great to see this movie featured here. I have very fond memories of the book as well. I was horse-crazy as a kid.

I know I saw this movie many years ago as my hubby is a big fan of westerns and horse movies. I can't remember any details either other than a striking young girl on a beautiful horse. This is a lovely tribute to a famous movie and a beautiful movie star. :)

I don't think I ever saw the movie. I've never been much of a TV or movies person. I do think Elizabeth Taylor was once of the most beautiful women of the 20th century and she had brains and gumption to match.

I'm sure I must have seen National Velvet many, many years ago, but I honestly don't remember any details. I'm sure I loved it, though. Elizabeth Taylor is just gorgeous. (Did I ever tell you I saw her once in person, close enough to see her violet eyes?)
