An American Pionner

Next time you squeeze into your new jeans, have a thought of gratitude for Eliza Lucas Pinckney. As a young woman of 16 she was already an American business pioneer.
Her father left her to take care of 3 plantations in South Carolina while he was in the militia.

Soon her entrepreneurial spirit took over and she was experimenting with growing different plants on her land.
After a few disappointments she was successful in growing indigo , yes that stuff that dyes your jeans to perfection. By doing so, she was responsible for South Carolina becoming a large indigo exporter to England in the 1700's.

She raised her sons Charles and Thomas with a progressive education, and later on they became famous on the American political scene.

Yes, and I knew a bit about her. I still wonder what she'd think of those saggy bottom jeans.
