Buy Pottery Bowls, Mugs, Goblets, Casserols, Vases and many other beautiful functional and decorative pieces of Art For Everyday.

We make and sell functional stoneware and pit fired ceramic art in northeast Wisconsin.
Now you can find us in our Etsy.com store. We sell goblets, mugs, bowls of all sizes, small dishes, candle-holders, pitchers, vases, ornaments, covered jars or casseroles, quiche dishes, plates, cups.
All of these are hand made, one at a time in our studio. John Dietrich spent 43 years learning to make the perfect bowl and he says he'll never do it, which is good, since it is one of the motivations he has to get into the studio each day.
Diane is self taught, mostly be hanging around John, working in the gallery and studio. She was a beader before this.
John started Ellison Bay Pottery 35 years ago in an old apple packing barn, which once didn't have running water or functioning bathrooms, or bedrooms or a kitchen. So he converted it into a studio, gallery and home.
This is a picture of a very large pitcher, one of the 2008 designs, not to be duplicated. It is functional, which means food safe. Microwave, oven and dishwasher safe, too.
There are two glazes on this pitcher. The colors are applied after he throws it, while it is still on the wheel. He used cobalt blue, translucent and opaque porcelain, and rutile colored slips.

Pit Fire Covered Jar

This is a non functional decorative piece.

Our pit fired work is fired in a bonfire.
We use pine wood since that provides a very high heat, almost 1700 F degrees.
This urn or covered jar was decorated with ferns we find in our forest. John uses something called old mine #4 terra siggilatta, which is very very very thin clay slip as a kind of glue to hold the leaves on. This terra sig also gives the pot a soft glow and color, kind of tan or gold.
He also uses various oxides, such as copper carbonate and salt water or cobalt carbonate and salt water as washes. Sometimes he pours it over the pot, giving it color and defined lines.
Sometimes he spatters it on, so the effect is more random.
We also use a red art terra sig, which is more of a reddish brown and imparts a deep red color after firing.
The most important and exciting thing about our pit firing is that we have no control over the end result. This gives us one of a kind ceramic art. It's not functional, so the vases and bowls etc. should have only dried arrangements.
