Everything about Elmo

1. Buy your items early. Everything that is related to the birthday should be Elmo Themed. From the cake to the plastic cups. Be sure to order these items way in advance in case they are out of stock. You might be the type of person to purchase party items at a local party store, but some stores may not have the items you are looking for. So, you might have to order them online. You don't want to pay an arm and a leg for expedited shipping. When they come in, be sure to hide them immediately so your little one doesn't find them. If your little one is especially curious, you might want to ship it elsewhere (a friend's house or a P.O. Box).

2. Make a Plan. Write down and schedule what activities you're going to do. You may not even use the plan, but sometimes it helps when there's a lull or it seems the children are not enjoying themselves. And sometimes young children prefer to be directed as opposed to running a muck. As you read this article, grab a pen and paper and make a plan that would fit your party. I will help you get some ideas on activities for those kiddos.

3. Put in an Elmo DVD. As the kids arrive, they might not be so sure on where to go or who to play with. If you put in a DVD, they will know to go watch it. Most likely, they'll all gather in front of the TV. This will make it very easy for you to introduce the next activity.

4 Play Elmo Music. Playing uplifting music in the background helps keep the mood light and fun. You can also use this music if you decide to play a Music Game like Musical Chairs.

5. Elmo Games Write down some of your favorite children's party games. Most Party Games can be altered to fit Elmo in. Check out my Elmo Party Game module on this lens for some ideas.

6.Summer Party with a Pool? It may not be summer or you may not have a pool, but if you do, here are some tips. Be sure you have a designated lifeguard. Since you're coordinating the party, it may not be a good idea for you to be the lifeguard. Get some Elmo themed pool supplies. This will add color to your pool, and get the kids excited. Get some outdoor themed Elmo toys too. Some children may not like swimming and can play with these instead. One option is the Elmo's World Ball Zone.

7. Make an Elmo Birthday Cake. Make your own cake that features Elmo. If you don't trust your cake-making abilities, order one at a local Bakery. Be sure to explain exactly what you want. Do you want just Elmo's head or his whole body? Do you want other smaller details like Dorothy on the cake? Make a plan ahead of time so you can explain exactly how you want the cake to look. Make sure you know what flavor the kids like too. You may even want to get cupcakes if you're unsure if some kids will dislike chocolate or vanilla.

8.Elmo Party Supplies. Make a list of party supplies that you typically get for a birthday party and see if they offer them in Elmo. Don't forget napkins, big plates, small plates, paper bowls (for ice cream), plasticware, paper cups, table covers (indoor & outdoor), centerpieces, plastic bibs (for younger messy kids), balloons, invitations and thank you letters, birthday hats, and pinatas. You may come up with a few others on your own. Have fun with it!

9. Elmo Toys, Books, Games, and DVDs. If there's a time during your party when there are no activities going on (i.e. when cake is being eaten), you may want to lay out some Elmo-themed items. If your kid is already into Elmo, he may already have a lot of these items laying around. Just set out different stations. For instance, a toy station, a book station, a "game" station, and a DVD station. At the game station, you can have coloring activities, word searches, etc.

10. Elmo Apparel. Make sure you and your family are wearing Elmo shirts. This will definitely add more Elmo to your party. Also, ask in your invitations for families and kids to wear Elmo clothes. Of course, you don't want them to go out and buy new clothes, but just ask them to add to theme.

11. Take PIctures. Make sure to get plenty of pictures. If you don't have time, get someone else to or set out disposable cameras so everyone can take pictures at their leisure.

12. Have Fun! Be sure to have fun. You don't want to get so caught up in a rigid schedule of events that no one is having fun. So, be open to change and let the kids do what they want. It's a birthday party!
