Eloise Jarvis McGraw, Award-Winning Author

Do your kids need something new to read? You want something that spins a killer yarn, but bypasses the innuendo that lesser authors use to hook their readers. Something that tells a classic tale, without being Moby Dick-difficult to read. Something that has stood the test of time but hasn't grown stale. Look no further! You have found Eloise Jarvis McGraw, three-time Newbery Honor Award winner and author extraordinaire.

Discovering Eloise Jarvis McGraw

An oldie but a goodie, Eloise McGraw is a child/teen author extraordinaire

I have always been a reader, able to get lost completely in whatever fantasy world I'm inhabiting at the moment. From my kindergarten year, when my mother tells me that by Christmas I was reading anything I picked up, to my current status as a homeschool mom of four, I have been a reader and a lover of books. I remember many, many books from my childhood fondly; even more amongst the many I have probably forgotten. But Eloise Jarvis McGraw, standing out sharply with just a handful of others from that myriad of forgotten childhood authors, holds a very special place in my heart.

One day in sixth grade - it might have been a Tuesday - my feet followed the well-worn (by me at least) path to the school's library. Wandering down the aisles, waiting for my next book or three to jump out at me from the leaning titles - or maybe I had just reached the Mc's as I read my way down the row of fiction authors - I chanced upon Mara, Daughter of the Nile. A turning point, indeed, in my reading career.

I read the book cover to cover in one sitting ... no great feat for me. But on closing the back cover of the book, I found that I had not had enough. For the first time in an already lengthy reading career, I sighed happily, flipped the book over, and started again at page one. Over the next months and years, I came back to this wonderful story many times, joined by readings and rereadings of Eloise's other splendid titles: Sawdust in his Shoes, Moccasin Trail, Greensleeves, The Golden Goblet.

Now, 30 or so years later, a certain exclamation still pops into my head occasionally (though I keep it to myself, as I don't greatly wish to be viewed as even more eccentric than I already am): "Amon and Isis and Osiris and the sacred cat of Bast!" Indeed, long passages and whole scenes of Mara and other McGraw books still come easily to my mind with a warm rush of remembered pleasure in the reading.

Much as I loved Mara and other wonderful stories by McGraw, they did fall off my reading list ... until recently. Now, however, my oldest children are 12 and 10 years of age, and it is high time they discover the magic of McGraw with me, as I discover it again - along with all the new books she published after I had moved on to other authors!

Sawdust in His Shoes we just read aloud and I was charmed to see my children enjoying every moment as much as I did on my first reading. My daughter has already read The Moorchild herself, a pleasure denied me at that age since it had not yet been written when I moved on to more adult fare; but of course I read it too, thrilled to have a new title from one of my most beloved authors.

Newbery Honor Award Winners

Three of Eloise McGraw's unforgettable novels were granted the Newbery Honor Award. While they certainly deserve it, I'm not sure they are any better than her other books. However, since a supposedly objective outside source deemed them honor-worthy, I'll highlight them here.

Moccasin Trail (Puffin Newberry Library)

Jim, a pioneer boy rescued from a bear attack by Indians, grows to manhood with them and nearly forgets his past. When he learns his parents are dead and his younger siblings need his help, he must also learn how to reconcile the two parts of himself, taking the best from both worlds without abandoning either. This book is an excellent coming-of-age story with plenty of page-turning thrilling episodes.

Amazon Price: $6.99 (as of 10/15/2008)

The Golden Goblet (Newbery Library, Puffin)

Ranofer, a young boy training with his father to become a master goldsmith, is forced by his father's death to abandon his beloved profession. Working in his half-brother's grueling stonemasonry trade, he begins to suspect his brother has been involved in tomb-robbing, and may be planning a huge heist very soon. The dangerous decisions Ranofer must make and his decisions to risk everything to stop the desecration of a sacred tomb make for a truly gripping story.

Amazon Price: $6.99 (as of 10/15/2008)

The Moorchild (Margaret K. McElderry Book)

Saaski is forced to leave The Mound, where the fairy folk live, because her half-human blood endangers the other folk. Left as a changeling in a human cradle, she grows up different and under suspicion from the villagers. She finds one friend, Tam, a tinker's assistant who doesn't seem to mind her differences. Saaski gradually begins to suspect her own origins, and when she finally discovers the truth, she is faced with the choice of remaining safe with her human family, or dangerously braving The Mound with Tam to find and rescue the human child she replaced and facing an uncertain future afterward. This book is a truly engaging look at the other side of the fairy tale.

Too fond of books ... is it even possible?

Too Fond of Books T-Shirts & Gear

Louisa May Alcott said it best ... She is too fond of books, and it has addled her brain. Of course it was said satirically of one of her characters but it is a label we fantasy lovers will wear with pride! See all "Too Fond of Books" t's & gear now!

I confess I missed this author as a child. I did read The Golden Goblet as an adult and remember enjoying it. Guess I need to go back and find these other books and read them with my children!

About tandemonimom

As a homeschool mom of four lively blessings, Tandemonimom finds herself with so much extra time on her hands, she must look for ways to fill it creatively. Posting personal info online seems to be a good way relieve some of the clamor in her head. Besides blogging & squidoo, she also doesn't have enough time for reading, scrapbooking, reading, knitting, writing, reading, and maintaining a CafePress shop. Besides reading (did she mention she enjoys reading?), she enjoys writing about herself in the third person. She is homeschooling the revolution right here, right now, in the great Sonoran desert with the Diva (13yo), the Tank (11yo), the Pistol (7yo), the Butterfly (5yo), and the VP (44yo) who underwrites and supports all her endeavors.
