Elsie Lee - Romantic Suspense and Historical Fiction Author

Elsie Lee, the Author (not Elsie Lee, the Actor)
I discovered Elsie Lee back in the 1960s and 1970s, when romantic suspense novels were big sellers with Mary Stewart publishing titles like The Ivy Tree. The market was saturated with writers hoping to achieve a similar success. Few really stood out from the crowd.
Elsie Lee built up a loyal readership in the romantic suspense genre with titles like The Drifting Sands and Diplomatic Lover. She also published Regency romances (The Nabob's Widow and A Prior Betrothal) that appealed to Georgette Heyer fans.
Elsie Lee lived from 1912 to 1987.

Again this is an Elsie Lee heroine that connects the dots in a nefarious plot that everyone else overlooks. Danica may look like a wide-eyed art student, but her family background in art history and her knowledge of French uncovers a cache of World War II art and an art forgery scheme.
Suspenseful and romantic. (review by Virginia Allain)

Here's the cover description: "At first, the job seemed a heaven-sent gift to lovely young Megan Royce. .. who desperately needed a helping hand.
What could be better than having all the expenses of her imperative trip to Europe paid... in return for being the pleasant guest of a charming, imperious Contessa?
But the situation changed rapidly as frightening complication piled on frightening complication. Megan's trip did not end in Paris as originally planned. It went on to Italy... to the beautiful but menacing old castle of Vellanti. And two questions loomed urgently on the starkly brooding horizon: what was the menace, and who the victim?
Megan's already bruised emotions were due for even more severe battering before she learned the answers--and found the one person in the entire dark tangle that she could trust... and love."

Elsie Lee just has a light way with her characters that hooks me. They are fun, talented, and always sound like someone you would enjoy meeting. This one, set in Washington D.C., has romance, international intrigue, and glamour. (by Virginia Allain)
From the back cover: As a top translator for the British Embassy in Washington, sophisticated Nonny Littauer was well-versed in the languages of men. But as a glamourous young lady, the jet-haired beauty was sorely lacking in the language of love. Then the towering, accomplished, experienced actor York Deland strode into her life, and Nonny hadn't a doubt that he'd be the perfect teacher to make a woman out of her. Now that Nonny was no longer a maid, she seemed vulnerable to all sorts of men. Why did she sense a hostile undercurrent beneath the English Attache Henry Devenish's impeccable manners? And why did the suaave French Duc de Chevanelle want to know so much about her investments? Now that she'd lost her innocence, was it imperative that she relinquish her optimism, her pride -- and her fortune-- as well?

The Curse of Carranca
Persis Bradbury is 6 foot tall and blue-eyed who believes she is engaged until her boyfriend dumps her for a blonde model and since she is so tall it's hard to find a guy of the appropriate height and she ends up asking her boss to send her to Madrid to work on a project for the company. She meets a girl on the plane (Doris) and becomes friends and meets Dom Sebastian (the Madrid Partner) and ends up marrying him. There is a mystery involving some lost/stolen artifacts, the war, her Uncle Ted who was a secret resistance fighter, a curse and a prophecy about a "blue-eyed witch from across the waters" who will lift the curse. This is one of my favorite Elsie Lee books and once again she has a very strong female protagonist. (review by Phillip Stephens)

Satan's Coast by Elsie Lee
set in Portugal
Satan's Coast (Lancer Easy-Eye, 75-368)
In the 1960's and 70's the gothic novel was the book that epitomized romance. It's been cynically described as girl gets house because the main characters were a heroine who is usually somehow tied to a sinister and usually palatial home.
In this book the heroine is a recently widowed fashion model. Her 15 year old step son is left in her care, and their inheritance is an estate on the coast of Portugal.
Elsie Lee had a way of taking cliches and turning them inside out. Her heroines are rarely helpless or stupid. The dialogue is spritely and the story moves at a good pace.
This one is well worth reading. (review by Sires, Top 1000 Amazon reviewer)
It wasn't supposed to happen---Nell Valentim expected her life to continue on "happily ever after." But then her husband died suddenly leaving her a young widow with a fifteen-year-old stepson to care for. She felt cheated and alone---until she decided to pick up the pieces of her shattered world by taking her stepson Chris to see his family's ancestral home on the Portuguese coast..
This contemporary romance has the trademark Elsie Lee touches with a smarter than expected heroine, some suspense, romance, interesting setting. (review by Virginia Allain)

David Hastings thinks Fiona Caswell and her employer, a Hollywood astrologist, are bilking his wealthy aunt. The accusations and surprise visits from this dynamic man disturbs her development of a love interest, a rising British movie star.
As always, Elsie Lee delivers an intriguing romantic suspense with glamourous touches, witty dialogue, and characters that you really care about. Don't miss the wonderful cat in this one. (review by Virginia Allain)

I saw this on E-Bay for a pretty high price. Here's how the seller described it: "This is indeed the same Elsie Lee that wrote 'The Nabob's Widow.' This is an extremely rare book, published in an elegant velveteen hard cover by Brandywyne Books. I think there may have been a soft cover of this book, but I have never found one. The book is about a woman, Rachel Page Prentice, who leaves her husband of 16 years and sets out to find happiness. It is classic Elsie Lee."
I've been an Elsie Lee fan for about 30 years and never have I seen this book.

Second Season by Elsie Lee
Second Season
Amazon Price: $0.49 (as of 05/30/2012)![]()
Elsie Lee takes a fairly ordinary Regency romance plot, but adds her own flair with the character, Sharlie Stanwood. Charlotte/Sharlie didn't take on her first season, but returns with her beautiful younger sister for another round. This time her interest in books, foreign travel, and riding and her outspoken ways catches the eye of the Duke of Imbrie. Although she doesn't conform to the simpish miss expected by society, she gains admirers, making the second season a success.
The conflict in the plot comes from confusion over the Duke of Imbrie's intentions. Sharlie counts him as one of her sister's admirers. The wary duke develops an attachment for Sharlie, but love is never simple in a regency romance.
This will appeal to fans of Georgette Heyer. (review by Virginia Allain)

Ivorstone Manor came out under Elsie Cromwell's name.
Look also for Jane Gordon's books. This is Elsie Lee also. Apparently she used pseudonyms for writing a variety of books (Lee Sheridan for cookbooks and Norman Daniels is another of her pseudonyms).

I just reread Ivorstone Manor. There's no mistaking Elsie Lee's deft way with characters and locale. The manor house lifestyle in Ireland complete with haughty gentry is no match for the heroine, Holly. Recently widowed, she reluctantly visits her husband's ancestral home and stand-offish family. Her visit triggers a series of incidents and it becomes apparent that someone wants to either drive her away or cause her to miscarry the heir to the manor. Amid all this, she uncovers old clues to the murder her husband was accused years ago. She knew he hadn't murdered his godfather, but could it have been his brother or the menacing manservant, Marsh?
The potential for romance comes from her husband's cousin, but still in mourning and with a baby on the way, the time is not right. Enjoy the scenery, the interesting cast of characters, the suspense and seeing how Holly sorts it all out.

- All of Elsie Lee's books are terrific. If you like Georgette Heyer, you'll like Elsie Lee. Not all of her books are regency novels, but the're all good. (Pauline "dilly41" on Amazon)
- This is one of her Regency novels. Even here, her heroines are smarter-than-average and fun. Don't miss any of her books. (Virginia Allain on Amazon)
- I love Ms. Lee's strong, women heroines and wish she had written many more books than she has. I have read most of her books anywhere from 4-5 times each and every time I re-read one I enjoy it as much as the first time I ever read it. (Phillip Stephens on Amazon)
- Elsie Lee is very good at this young widow thing - although almost all of her stuff has met my taste. However, this one (Mistress of Mount Fair), Ivorstone Manor and Satan's Coast are all rather alike and yet enough different to still be a very good read. If you like modern style gothics, this is great. If you don't, too bad! (J. Sneed on Amazon)
- I am an avid Elsie Lee fan and have and love all of her books, even have her very well written cookbooks. (comment by R.R. Anderson on Amazon)

Elsie Lee includes some great cats in her books. Obviously she's a cat lover and I'm guessing a Siamese cat lover.

- I haven't heard of Elsie Lee before, but it sounds like she has some great escapism stories where you can just disappear into the world of the book for a while. Nicely done.

- Here I am, another big Elsie Lee fan since I read my first book by her some 50 years ago in high school. She's been one of my favorites ever since and the first author whose books I collected, though I still don't have all of them. When I saw the title Mystery Castle (1973) some years ago, I somehow found out that it was the British title for Satan's Coast published in the US in 1969. Sadly I can't remember exactly how I managed that, but I remember looking for British book sites that had the synopses of the books. Though there is no synopsis at www.fantasticfiction.co.uk, they do give the alternate British titles for some of the other reissues there. It seems that most of her titles were changed for British.consumption.
On several sites some books for Jane Gordon are listed as being published between 1995 and 2002. However, according to fant.fic. she passed away in 1987; the last of these books would have been published 15 years after her passing. Has anyone read any of these books? There's a link from the Elsie Lee page to the Jane Gordon page if anyone would like to have a look.
