Born Reginald Kenneth Dwight in 1947 he changed his name to Elton Hercules John
His first band, Bluesology, was formed in 1961.
How did Elton John get his name? It came from a mix of the names of two fellow band members from his band Bluesology. The Bluesology saxophonist Elton Dean and their charismatic frontman, Long John Baldry.
Elton John was introduced to Bernie Taupin in 1967 by Ray Williams at Liberty Records. The rest as they say is song writing history. Amazingly, their first compositions were conducted by mail. Known as very prolific songwriters - Taupin could write the lyrics in 30 minutes and Elton would have the melody within an hour.

Elton John Aids Foundation
Elton has said that he finds his charity work more rewarding than all his years of musical success. "It's really, really satisfying. I am doing something decent with my life, I'm not wasting it. I'm not putting it up my nose, I'm not drinking it, I'm not putting it down my throat, I'm actually doing something that is worthwhile and I wish I had come to my senses much earlier."
The mission of the Elton John AIDS Foundation is "to provide funding for educational programs targeted at HIV/AIDS prevention and/or the elimination of prejudice and discrimination against HIV/AIDS-affected individuals, and for programs that provide services to people living with or at risk from HIV/AIDS."

Elton John Daniel
"Daniel had been the most misinterpreted song that we'd ever written" explained Bernie in the "Two Rooms" tribute project. "The story was about a guy that went back to a small town in Texas, returning from the Vietnam war. They'd lauded him when he came home and treated him like a hero. But he just wanted to go home, go back to the farm, and try to get back to the life that he'd led before. I wanted to write something that was sympathetic to the people that came home".
Part of the reason for this confusion was that Elton cut the final verse of the song as he felt it was too long. Their record company did not want to promote the single saying Daniel was too long and somber to be a hit.

Raise Money on Elton John's Birthday

- In December 2001, eltonjohn.com received an Email suggesting an annual charity event to support EJAF. The message was from Nancy Case, and in March 2002 she hosted the first ever Lunch Around The World (LATW) event.
Her concept was simple but splendid: get together with your friends around the time of Elton's birthday and raise money for the Elton John AIDS Foundation.

- I can't even count how many EJ concerts I've been to. I used to live just south of Chicago and I was a monster fan since I was 15 up until and including the Blue Moves album. One year I went 5 nights in a row. I have too many favorite songs, so i'll leave it at the song which was love at first sight - Your Song.
My favorite Concert song was easily - Daniel. the one on this lens was an earlier version of the way he used to do it. I'll try to upload a later version. He could easily do 20-30 minutes of Daniel and is was GREAT!
Thanks for the lens! ***** and a favorite
It's really too bad so many people think of him as "just" a teenybopper musician. I think he was a genius, at least in the early years, with Bernie. Oh, one more thing. I remember listening to an interview with him and Bernie. the guy was asking what a particular song meant. Bernie said, I just write them, I don't know what they mean - with a smile on his face. Bob Dylan said the same thing :)
