Born Reginald Kenneth Dwight in 1947 he changed his name to Elton Hercules John

His first band, Bluesology, was formed in 1961.

How did Elton John get his name? It came from a mix of the names of two fellow band members from his band Bluesology. The Bluesology saxophonist Elton Dean and their charismatic frontman, Long John Baldry.

Elton John was introduced to Bernie Taupin in 1967 by Ray Williams at Liberty Records. The rest as they say is song writing history. Amazingly, their first compositions were conducted by mail. Known as very prolific songwriters - Taupin could write the lyrics in 30 minutes and Elton would have the melody within an hour.

Elton John Candle in the Wind

Elton John's poignant song at Princess Diana's Funeral

No one who witnessed the funeral can forget Elton John's tribute to his friend Princess Diana.

Candle in the Wind became the fastest selling single of all time, and with 33 million copies sold, the second biggest selling single.

All proceeds from the sale were donated to the Diana Princess of Wales Memorial Fund.

Elton John Candle in the Wind

Candle in the Wind was originally recorded in 1973 as a tribute to Marilyn Monroe. It was originally a B side to the single Something About the Way You Look Tonight. The words were adapted by Bernie Taupin for Diana's funeral.

Elton still performs the 1973 version but has said that he will never perform the 1997 version again unless he is asked to by Diana's sons Prince William and Prince Harry.

Elton John Aids Foundation

Elton John founded the Elton John AIDS Foundation in 1992 shortly after he finally won his battles with addiction.

Elton has said that he finds his charity work more rewarding than all his years of musical success. "It's really, really satisfying. I am doing something decent with my life, I'm not wasting it. I'm not putting it up my nose, I'm not drinking it, I'm not putting it down my throat, I'm actually doing something that is worthwhile and I wish I had come to my senses much earlier."

The mission of the Elton John AIDS Foundation is "to provide funding for educational programs targeted at HIV/AIDS prevention and/or the elimination of prejudice and discrimination against HIV/AIDS-affected individuals, and for programs that provide services to people living with or at risk from HIV/AIDS."
Elton John AIDS Foundation
Established by Sir Elton John in 1992, the Elton John AIDS Foundation (EJAF) is one of the world's leading nonprofit organizations supporting innovative HIV/AIDS prevention education programs and direct care and support services to people living with HIV/AIDS. Since its founding, EJAF has raised over $125 million to support worthy programs in 55 countries around the globe. EJAF supports its work through proceeds from special events, cause-related marketing projects, and voluntary contributions from individuals, corporations, and foundations.

The Squidoo Viritual Concert Series

U2 talks about the One Campaign in every concert they have. Coldplay talks about Oxfam International. A stage with thousands of screaming adoring fans is a good time to promote a good cause.

Remember "We Are the World"? Farm Aid? Band Aid? All hosted to raise money for causes. How? Bands got together to perform, raise awareness and donate money. What a great idea!

Summer is concert season. It seems like all bands go on tour. Nothing like live music on a warm summer night!

What if you could host a benefit concert? You have a cause that's important to you. What better way to have it announced than by your favorite performer in a room full of people who paid big bucks to get there?

This is the point of the Virtual Concert Week on Squidoo.

Who would you pick and what cause would you raise money for? Make a lens and tell us about it!

Princess Diana Changed Lives

There are certain images which remain with you. In 1987 the photo of Princess Diana holding the hand of a man who had Aids is for me one of those images. Princess Diana made a difference. Sir Elton John is making a difference.

Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word

A sad song about unrequited love - a rare Elton John song as most of the lyrics were written by Elton himself, not Bernie Taupin. First released in 1976 this is one of Elton John's most popular ballads.

Elton John Tiny Dancer

Written in 1971 by Elton John and Bernie Taupin this song was a very slow starter! It had success in the US but didn't chart in the UK when first released. But over time it featured regularly on radio stations and Elton says it is now one of the most requested songs on his play list.

Sir Elton John Was Inspired By Ryan White

Sir Elton John had lost friends to Aids but it was Ryan White who inspired him to take action.

Elton John Daniel

There were many years of speculation about the meaning of the lyrics in the Elton John and Bernie Taupin song Daniel. The inspiration behind Bernie Taupin's lyrics was the plight of veterans returning home from the Vietnam war.

"Daniel had been the most misinterpreted song that we'd ever written" explained Bernie in the "Two Rooms" tribute project. "The story was about a guy that went back to a small town in Texas, returning from the Vietnam war. They'd lauded him when he came home and treated him like a hero. But he just wanted to go home, go back to the farm, and try to get back to the life that he'd led before. I wanted to write something that was sympathetic to the people that came home".

Part of the reason for this confusion was that Elton cut the final verse of the song as he felt it was too long. Their record company did not want to promote the single saying Daniel was too long and somber to be a hit.

I can't even count how many EJ concerts I've been to. I used to live just south of Chicago and I was a monster fan since I was 15 up until and including the Blue Moves album. One year I went 5 nights in a row. I have too many favorite songs, so i'll leave it at the song which was love at first sight - Your Song.

My favorite Concert song was easily - Daniel. the one on this lens was an earlier version of the way he used to do it. I'll try to upload a later version. He could easily do 20-30 minutes of Daniel and is was GREAT!

Thanks for the lens! ***** and a favorite

It's really too bad so many people think of him as "just" a teenybopper musician. I think he was a genius, at least in the early years, with Bernie. Oh, one more thing. I remember listening to an interview with him and Bernie. the guy was asking what a particular song meant. Bernie said, I just write them, I don't know what they mean - with a smile on his face. Bob Dylan said the same thing :)
