Elvis Presley: The King of Rock and Roll
Elvis Presley is a pop culture icon, typically referred to as simply Elvis. Within a year of his first appearance on American television, 21-year-old Elvis Presley became one of the most famous people in the world. Riots were commonplace at his live performances, where fevered crowds reacted to the first utterances of "You ain't nothin' but a Hound Dog." The composer and conductor Leonard Bernstein called Elvis "the greatest cultural force in the twentieth century." His image and brand are still recognized and marketed worldwide, and have inspired scores of Elvis impersonators of all ages. Elvis Presley's first film Love Me Tender was released in 1957. From that point on, Elvis received top billing on each of the more than 30 films he starred in, including Blue Hawaii, Viva Las Vegas, and Harum Scarum. The cardboard standups shown below depict Elvis Presley at various stages in his career, from Jailhouse Rock in 1957, to Flaming Star in 1960, to Paradise, Hawaiian Style in 1966, to the trademark embellished white jumpsuit he wore in the seventies. There is even an Army fatigue standup—Elvis Presley served in the military for two years from 1958 to 1960.

- I was in Memphis quite a few years ago. My friend and I were in a restaurant across the street from Graceland. We decided we wouldn't take the time to see it. I've wondered why several times since that day why we didn't bother. However if I ever return to Memphis I will see Graceland.
