Understandably, residents of Tennessee feel a sense of pride when they think of their home state. There are many iconic things that have come out of Tennessee; the Vols, Kenny Chesney, the 1982 World's Fair, and the ELVIS SANDWICH RECIPE.

Oh yes, this well-known peanut butter and banana sandwich has had many variations but will always be known as an Elvis sandwich. Some people say that this unhealthy sandwich may have contributed to Elvis's death; others have called it a genius. Whatever you think of this odd concoction of food, Tennesseans are proud to claim it.

The Peanut Butter, Banana and Bacon Sandwich

The legend of the Elvis Sandwich Recipe.

Often referred to as the Elvis sandwich and sometimes even called just the Elvis, this peanut butter, banana and bacon sandwich consists of exactly those ingredients - two pieces of bread toasted, peanut butter, a sliced banana and some fried bacon. Honey is optional. The whole sandwich is usually grilled as you would a grilled cheese sandwich.

The recipe for Elvis' sandwich is available in many cookbooks, magazine articles and newspapers and can even be found as an item to purchase in restaurants that sell pb sandwiches like P.B. Loco and Peanut Butter & Co.

People refer to the peanut butter and banana sandwich as one of Elvis Presley's favorites but his food cravings are infamous and include other specialties like Fool's Gold Loaf, which consists of an Italian bread loaf loaded with bacon, peanut butter and grape jelly.

The Elvis Sandwich

Elvis' love of this sandwich is legendary. However, bacon is not always a part of the recipe although in a book about Elvis' mom, Gladys Presley, it is claimed that he consumed and even wolfed down his favorite sandwich with crisp bacon.

Another story says that he ate his sandwiches with peanut butter, caramelized banana and crispy bacon. The Good, the Bad, and the Yummy states that "Elvis might have been horribly misguided about drugs and sequins, but he got one thing right -- peanut butter and banana sandwiches". They recommend using one half of a banana and one piece of bacon on each sandwich and then grilling it all together in a pan with melted butter.

To Have Bacon Or Not

That is the question

Whether Elvis had bacon on his original sandwich or not, I want to know how you would prefer it.

Should the Elvis Sandwich have bacon on it?

Loading

Of course! Bacon makes everything better.

J9a2m6e8s5B says:

I love bacon! Might as well try it in it's original form.

scarlettohairy says:

Why not? If you want to eat this go ahead and add the wonderful taste of bacon!

tandemonimom says:

I've never tried this sandwich (and WON'T) but on general principle I have to say bacon DOES make everything better!

Hairdresser007 says:

I usually like it plain but will try it with bacon. I think it is fine but will probably just stick with the plain version but fried with butter of course!

Susan52 says:

If Elvis says bacon, then bacon it is.

Treasures-By-Brenda says:

It wouldn't be THE ELVIS SANDWICH without the bacon, would it?

LotusMalas says:

Bacon DOES make everything better :-)

clouda9 says:

Yum and yes add the bacon!

LKW31 says:

Absolutely with bacon, but I think it would need to be extra crispy!

j_barnhart4 says:

I've never been one to shy away from a little grease. I say bacon all the way!

No Way! This sandwich is already unhealthy.

jennysue19 says:

not for me. I like just peanut butter and banana in a brown floury bread roll, ow wholemeal bread sandwich. Not fried. I'm supposed to be cutting down to lose weight so it was a real treat today!

Mistel says:

I think the Peanut butter and bananas would be enough for me to get quesy, without adding the bacon to the mix

Gloriousconfusion says:

I think banana and peanut is enough of a good thing. Any two of these three fillings might taste all right, but THREE??? One might say it's over-egging the gingerbread!

Tipi says:

Its a banana a day, that keeps the doctor away. And, peanut butter is very healthy too. On on whole wheat bread, oh yey!

Margo_Arrowsmith says:

Peanut butter and banana isn't unhealthy, the bacon grease is superfilous and no one would miss it, except perhaps Elvis and it killed him (well that and the prescription drugs. )

poutine says:

It's already loaded with calories, the bacon would be too much.

Pukeko says:

We make peanut butter and banana all the time, I never thought of it as unhealthy before. After all, it is ground nuts and fruit :)

Joan4 says:

We have never tried bacon on a banana sandwich. I use mayo and bananas. Hubby likes peanut butter, mayo and bananas. I am not going to tell him about the bacon! or the frying! sounds fantastic, but .....

Heather426 says:

We like the bacon on the side and the sandwich deep fried. I am from Southern genes, in fact, I'm related to Elvis who was born in Missippippi where some of my relatives still live.

bethd821 says:

I do love bacon, but just can't imagine it would taste good with peanut butter and banana. Might have to try it to find out after I take an extra dose of Lipitor!

I'm not a fan of bananas but have eaten peanut butter on bananas, which make them more palatable. Won't be eating the sandwich though.

Never heard of an Elvis sandwich before, but in all honesty, I'm happy to not know about such a mixture :(
    Any way, it's well presented...

I didn't know it was called the Elvis sandwich. I first had a relative, PB, bananas & avacodo on top of Mt. Ranier in 1973! I always liked something green or Bacon, YUUUUMY, in it. Thanks for this!

Though I am a big fan of the king, I'll have to admit that Bacon with Bananas is not my favorite combination. I'd leave the more adventurous amongst us to try out this recipe.

Last year at the state fair they sold deep fried butter. The supposedly healthier we get the more unhealthy we get.

Elvis was a great musician. I think that did not reach the same mastery in the kitchen.
