Elvis Presley on Stage from 1969 - 1973
From 31st July 1969 to 26th of June 1977 Elvis Presley performed a staggering 1,156 shows over 52 tours.
The concert documentaries That's The Way It Is and Elvis on Tour with the addition of the recently restored TV special Aloha from Hawaii bear testimony to Elvis' phenomenal stage presence and the electricity of his live performances.
Fortunately, although only a handful of Elvis' performances were officially recorded by RCA for album releases, many of these shows were either taped by members of the audience or recorded by sound engineers (soundboard recordings).
This lens is an introduction to what's out there...I'll add concerts chronologically so keep checking back to see what has been added!

Elvis on stage in 1970
1970 - Focus on That's The Way It Is
A documentary directed by Denis Sanders

First released on 11 November 1970 and re-released with new material on 19th January, 2001, the film follows preparations for Elvis' Summer Festival in Las Vegas during August of 1970 culminating in some of the best footage ever recorded of Elvis performing live on stage at the International Hotel.
Recorded over three performances, the film gives the viewer the experience of being in front row seats at one complete concert - from the first moment Elvis walks out on stage, to the closing strains of Can't Help Falling in Love.
The touring Elvis: The Concert show with Elvis' original band members, the TCB band, uses extensive TTWII footage - Elvis' 1970 performances are still thrilling live audiences today!
The musicians on stage with Elvis in the film are: James Burton (lead guitar), John Wilkinson (rhythm guitar), Glenn D. Hardin (piano), Jerry Scheff (bass), Ronnie Tutt (drums), Charlie Hodge (guitar and harmony vocals), Millie Kirkham (vocals), The Sweet Inspirations (vocals), The Imperials (vocals), Joe Guercio (conductor).

1971 - All Things are Possible
DAE 3595-4 - Released 1995
This midnight show was recorded on the opening night at the International Hotel in Las Vegas on 27th January, 1971. It is a fair soundboard recording of an interesting show revealing all facets of Elvis' complex stage persona in one recording - for example the exquisite rendition of Only Believe which is followed by a flippant, throwaway version of what was usually a show-stopper How Great Thou Art.
Nicely packaged in DAE trademark gate fold sleeve.

1971 - A Thunder in the Night
SR Records - released 2006

Although the sound quality of this audience recording of the Midnight Show at Lake Tahoe, on 1st August, 1971 makes this a CD for die-hard collectors only, SR records have done the best job possible with poor source material. The sheer excitement of seeing the King live is brilliantly captured.
A must, nevertheless, for the Elvis concert completist in that it contains a rare live performance of the gospel song I, John and represents an historically important show from his first season at Lake Tahoe.

Elvis on stage in 1971
1972 - Focus on Elvis On Tour
directed by Robert Abel and Pierre Adidge

A much loved favourite with Elvis fans, this 1972 music documentary is well overdue for DVD release in remastered picture quality and in its original wide "multi-screen" presentation given that the VHS 4:3 format edition has now been deleted.
Sadly, as yet, there is no confirmed release date for a DVD (although the unofficial "import" DVDs currently circulating would seem to indicate that the MGM vaults must be full of wonderful material - easily enough for a very special extended edition).
Elvis on Tour was Elvis' thirty-third and final motion picture and followed him as he embarked on a 15-city tour of the United States in April 1972. The movie went on to win the 1973 Golden Globe Award for Best Documentary.

1972 - Focus on the Madison Square Garden Concerts

On 9th June 1972 Elvis Presley made a triumphant return to New York, the city where he had recorded his early career-launching televison appearances on the Ed Sullivan show, with a series of four sell-out shows at Madison Square Garden.
Within days of the concerts the recording of the evening show on 10th June had been released by RCA as Elvis as Recorded at Madison Square Garden, whilst fans had to wait until 1997 for the release of the afternoon show recorded that same day - An Afternoon in the Garden.
These historic concerts would prove to be Elvis' only live stage shows in New York. Although there is no official film footage there seems to be a considerable amount of material in circulation, some of it of (almost) professional looking quality!

The Fort Baxter CD Elvis at Full Blast which featured the midnight show from August 11, 1972 has been a firm favourite with collectors for many years. It's less easy to come by these days, so this new release by Madison of the midnight show on the following evening, which comes with great packaging and in improved sound, is a welcome addition.Elvis gives a focussed performance and includes three new numbers into the set list in this season - What Now My Love, Fever and My Way.

1973 - Focus on Aloha from Hawaii

No lens on Elvis live concerts would be complete without looking at what is his most famous concert - and possibly one of the most famous live concerts to have ever been performed by any artist in recent history - Aloha from Hawaii.
Broadcast live via satellite around the world on January 14, 1973, the performance at the Convention Center in Honolulu, Hawaii was watched in excess of a staggering one billion television viewers worldwide, airing in over 40 countries across Asia and Europe. (Curiously, US viewers had to wait until April that year to watch the transmission).
So innovative was the technology that Elvis had even pre-recorded a rehearsal concert and some extra songs two days earlier, just in case disaster struck during the satellite broadcast!
The concert raised $75,000 for the Kui Lee Cancer Fund in Hawaii. Kui Lee composed 'I'll Remember You' which Elvis performs during the show.

Gravel Road Music - Released 2007
Once again, this CD is a reissue in improved sound of a previous Fort Baxter import CD It's A Matter Of Time, this time by Gravel Road Music. This company have clearly learned a few tricks from Madison as the packaging here is superb - a lavish 20 page booklet containing nineteen colour photos from this period presented as a tribute to photographer Ed Bonja (who took the classic album cover shot for the official RCA 1973 studio release Raised on Rock).Similar in feel to the Aloha from Hawaii concert this has some noteworthy variations in the setlist - 'I Got A Woman' replaces 'Burning Love', whilst 'Until It's Time For You To Go' and 'You Don't Have To Say You Love Me' replace 'Something' and 'My Way' respectively.
