Email Marketing History
Where did marketing with email get its start?
Email marketing came into existence after the creation of the internet in the 1990's. Email quickly caught on and began to grow in popularity between all type of people. Email particularly attracted the attention of businesses looking for newer, more efficient ways to contact customers or potential customers.
Email marketing, was officially born when businesses discovered that this method is less expensive, more efficient, more measurable, and more targeted than direct mail via "snail mail."
By 1995, the number of email advertisements sent out that year was more than the number sent out by regular snail mail. However, email was soon discovered by spammers, who bombarded legitimate email marketers with irrelevant junk.
When the amount of email in consumers' mailboxes became overwhelming, spam filters were invented, which used titles, headlines, and email addresses to filter unwanted "spam" into their junk mail.
Spam complaints also came into existence, allowing a recipient to report the "spammer" to their Internet Service Provider (ISP) in order to prevent future email similar to the spam from reaching their inbox. This is made very easy by most email clients, simply pushing a "This is Spam" pushbutton.
