Embedding Images in Posts

This is a quick basic guide to embedding images in forum posts, designed for the non-technical reader.

Most forums use BBCode, so the guide will revolve around that but also offer advice on things like Flickr and Photobucket.

The BBCode for Images

Write your own code

First, I'm going to show you what the BBCode to embed an image looks like. All code examples will be in Green to make it easier to view.

The basic format is:
[img]image location[/img]

So [img]http://dragcave.net/image/Uotl.gif[/img] will look like this in your post:

To make a linked image you need to use the additional code [url][/url] as show below:
[url=Link Location][img]Image Location[/img][/url]

So this code:
[url=http://dragcave.net/view/Uotl][img]http://dragcave.net/image/Uotl.gif[/img][/url]

Produces this image that you can click on to view the linked page:Adopt one today!

Simple enough?

This will work for most boards. However some image hosting sites can be trickier. Here is how to embed images from certain specific sites.
Important!

Images must be online!

To embed your image it must be available online. Photobucket or Flickr accounts are easy ways to do this. Other sites where you can place images include Google, Picasa, Facebook and others.

You can also get standard webspace from a free host such as angelfire and upload it there, if you are familiar with web hosts.

Photobucket

An inbuilt BBCode option

Photobucket Share this PhotoPhotobucket offers the BBCode ready generated.
  • Look at the "Share My photos" box
  • The code is the IMG Code option.
However this does not link the images, and you would have to add the [url][/url]code manually.

Flickr BBCode

Third party generators.

Flickr does not allow you to embed their images directly and does not generate BBCode for it. usually this would leave you manually creating the BBCode.

However, this third party tool creates BBCode which you can then cut and paste into your message:
Flickr BBcode Tool
Flickr BBcode Tool
This tool is designed to let you embed Flickr images into posts on Bulletin Boards that do not support HTML posting,
whilst still complying with Flickr's terms that any posted image should link back to flickr. Please note that this is very much a "work in progress" and has not been

Manually creating BBCode

How to manually embed an Image

If you need to manually create the code, for example to link to a picture on your website, this isn't hard.

First create your post with [img][/img] tags. Then:

In Firefox:

  1. Open a new tab with the page where the image is
  2. Right click on the image
  3. Click on Copy Image Location
  4. Go back to your post
  5. Paste the image location between [img][/img]

In IE

  1. Open a new tab with the page where the image is
  2. Right click on the image
  3. Click on Properties
  4. Select the data next to Address(url) and copy
  5. Go back to your post
  6. Paste the image location between [img][/img]

Advanced options

Optional BBCodes

These are not supported by all boards, so if you use them, check whether they work by viewing your post in "Preview" before posting.
  • 1[img height=XX]IMAGE[/img] The height tag, added like this sets the height of the image displayed in pixels. If you have a large image you can make it smaller by using this tag. To use, replace XX with the height, e.g. height=125.Width can be set the same way.
  • 2[img alt="XX"]IMAGE[/img] This adds a line of descriptive text to the image that search engines can find, and that some forums display when the mouse is over the image. e.g. alt="A Grey Dog". Note the quotes - these are important if you use this option.
