Embroidered Knot Gardens

Melted Fabrics Challenge 6
This week at the Melted Fabrics Yahoo Group we're looking at knot gardens for our weekly challenge.
A while ago I saw a book by Owen Davies and Gillian Holdworth featuring beautiful embroidered gardens and became interested in the idea of sewing my own little garden.
This lens is going to chart the process I take from inspiration to completed textiles piece.
As you can see from the image opposite, my garden may not follow the same rules as more traditional knot gardens!

The best place to start is to look at gardens and see what appeals to you and what you would like to sew.
I like sewing women best so maybe I could look at how I could sew a figure whose dress was made out of leaves and flowers.
How could I turn the image below into an exciting textiles piece?
What About This Knot Garden?
Maybe this could be a textiles cloth book where you can see through the layers of the garden?
What do you think?
Maybe You Could Have a Knot Garden With A Bird's Eye View?
You could take a view of a garden like this one and use that pattern to make a decorative piece of embroidery, or you could take a piece of fabric with patterning and use that as inspiration for topiary in an embroidered garden.
Celtic Knotwork
Look at how this image uses the idea of knotwork and adds flowers into the piece too!

What about this Celtic cross? Maybe you could choose some knotwork and think about how to add it into your garden. This complicated knot could be a series of hedges or even ordered brambles. What about thinking about the story of Sleeping Beauty and the roses growing up around the Palace?

I love the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe so the idea of a streetlamp used like this really appeals to me!

This ia an interesting idea. Maybe the blue part of this "garden" might be a pond?

I love this idea of the tree roots being a tangled mess like in the image below. How could you interpret this into textiles?
