Are you Prepared?
Do you think emergency preparedness is just for the doom and gloom crowd? Or do you think all you need are a few bottles of water and cans of chicken noodle soup in case an emergency hits? There's a happy medium to these two attitudes. You don't have to think the world is going to end tomorrow to believe it's just good common sense to prepare for an emergency. Neither do you have to be so naive as to think nothing bad can really happen.
Putting extra food by in case of emergencies is something that our ancestors did as a means of survival. They didn't have the luxury of going to the corner store. What if bad weather happens where you are and results in a power outage or conditions that keep you from getting to the store? Are you prepared? In this directory, I've included all of my Squidoo lenses and articles I've published elsewhere on the internet about long-term food storage and will continue to grow as I add more. Learn some of the basics about building up a rotating food storage program that will help buffer you and your family against food shortage problems that can be a result of anything from a blizzard to a job loss and more.

Water
Water should be at the top of your storage list as it's necessary for survival in any situation.
- Emergency Water Storage Supplies for Home and Travel Preparedness
- Emergency water storage is the most important first step in preparedness planning. You can take steps to avert disaster whether you're caught in an earthquake or hurricane or simply make life easier when you and your family are facing a smaller emergency.
Powdered Milk
Powdered milk isn't what it used to be. It also isn't the only milk-like alternative to the milk you buy at the grocery store. If you consider how many things you cook involve milk, you'll want to think about having powdered milk or one of the alternatives on hand including powdered soy, rice and coconut milk.
Rice
If you don't like rice, don't store it, but if you do, rice is a food that can last upwards of 10 years if stored properly.
Beans
Beans are an excellent source of protein and iron. Like rice, they have a long shelf life if stored in the right conditions.
Wheat Berries and Grain Mills
Wheat berries can be ground into flour to make bread, sprouted to eat or grow into wheatgrass for juicing, used to make bulgur and cereals and so much more. Buy it now while it's still relatively inexpensive and learn how to use it. You'll also need to get a grinder to use your wheat many of the items you want to make and I've gathered some of the top brands of manual and electric grinders in one of the articles below.
"There is no such thing as luck. There is only adequate or inadequate preparation to cope with a statistical universe." ~ Robert Heinlein
Store Your Food for Years
So what exactly are the right conditions to store food that I keep talking about? Learn what I mean in this lens in which I also give suggestions for the best storage supplies.
Oxygen Absorbers
Oxygen is one of the factors that adds to the breakdown of food storage. Learn more about how oxygen absorbers can help your food last longer.
Emergency Preparedness Basics
Powdered Eggs
Like milk, eggs are a food many of us use daily. Powdered eggs are excellent to use for baking and cooking when you've run out of fresh eggs.
- Powdered Eggs for Preparedness
- Powdered eggs are part of a plan for long-term food storage to prepare for your future and provide for your family in case of emergency or economic distress.
TVP - Textured Vegetable Protein
Meat Substitute
Some people keep TVP in their food storage as a cheap, long shelf life alternative to canned meat.
- A Meat-Eater's Review of Honeyville Grain's Beef-Flavored Textured Vegetable Protein
- TVP is used as a meat substitute. This beef-flavored version can be used in most things that call for ground beef. I share my experiences with the product as well as the pros and cons.
Cooking with Food Storage
As someone beginning your long-term food storage, you should be starting with the foods you already eat. But once you start thinking beyond the 6-month mark, you might consider seriously storing wheat and dehydrated foods. In that case, these books will give you some tips on cooking with your food storage. It's best to learn now when there isn't an emergency rather than having to figure it out when you're in a bad situation.
