Emergency Survival Kit: Preparing for Emergency Disaster

The Emergency Survival Kit is one of the essentials when you are considering developing an overall Emergency Disaster Plan. Assembling a kit for both your home and automobiles requires some careful consideration as each families requirements will have some unique items as well as common items.
Each emergency disaster kit can be tailored to suit your specific needs. The basic items include emergency food, water, emergency shelter, emergency heat and first aid. You should consider what specific threats pose the highest probability in your geographic location.

Would an Emergency Survival Kit help in a large scale disaster?

If suddenly confronted by the possibility of not having access to essentials, how long could you last?

If a national or regional disaster occurred, are you prepared? Do you have an Emergency Survival Kit?

Think about it!

What if the attacks on September 11, 2001 were only a diversion to take our eyes off the real coordinated attack that took out the national power grid, then the communication grid leaving the United States of America without power and communication? How long would it be before you were helpless, cold and hungry?

What about earthquakes, floods, tornadoes and hurricanes. Do they happen?

Think About it! The threat is real.

Think About it! Then take action to do something about ensuring that you and your family have prepared for the unimaginable.

It's all about Preparation

Being prepared for an emergency survival situation takes planning.

Do-it-yourself Emergency Preparation

Depending on the regional threats Floods, Hurricanes, Fires, Tornadoes, Earthquakes, Volcanoes, etc. and the potential severity of those threats, will determine what you will need to give yourself the best leverage for coping with those threats.

There are always the very basic necessities food, water and shelter and first aid. The quantities are determined by number of people that need to be supported.

FOOD:
You should have a supply of freeze dried , dehydrated, and/or Meals-ready-to-Eat (MRE)'S sufficient to support each person for a minumum of 72 hours.

Water:
The general rule of thumb for water is 2 gallons per person per day. This might sound excessive but you will be using water for more than drinking.

Shelter:
Two person tube tent minimum, larger size is better.
Wool blanket or sleeping bag.
Emergency Space blanket.
Instant hand/body warming pads.
Propane powered Heater, 20 pound cylinder mounted

First Aid:
I recommend taking a first aid class including CPR and to keep your cards current as you may need to help others around you.
First aid kit for home and car.
First aid manual.
Extra prescription medications.
Aspirin or Ibuprofen.

Due to the scope of Emergency Preparation, I am going to break this into separate lenses as follows:

Be Prepared... Before an emergency situation strikes!

In a disaster emergency, there's no time to prepare.

Hind sight is 20/20. The most common lament from disaster victims is " if I'd only been a little more prepared"

For a number of years, I was a volunteer member of our county Dept. of Emergency Management (DEM). Every year in the late fall and winter we would have a period of time where our region would be pounded with high winds and torrential rains. Every year during these times the DEM would get activated to assist those people that lived in problematic areas prone to flooding and remote areas where wind damage would isolate large areas of population. I couldn't tell you the number of people that, even with knowing their past history of getting isolated by these weather events, failed to prepare for situations that would isolate them for up to three weeks. Without electricity, water, food and sometimes shelter.

Our emergency teams would have to go to the rescue of these people. Because evacuation was usually not an option in most cases, unless it were a life and death situation, supplies would have to be air dropped to those needing supplies. many of these stranded people didn't have enough essential supplies to last two or three days. They relied on being able to go to the grocery store and gas station as they needed. Taking for granted that there would always be electricity to operate their homes, many didn't feel the need to have an inventory of essentials on hand. They were wrong!

Whether you live in a rural area or dwell in the an urban area, the time to prepare for disaster is now. Not after a crisis situation has occurred. Start now, make an inventory of the essentials you'd need and stock enough for at least a 72 hour survival. You should have an emergency survival kit in your car as well because your not always going to be at home when disaster strikes.
